COMMUNITY United Way Halton & Hamilton surpasses $10 million goal DAVID LEA dlea@oakvillebeaver.com United Way Halton & H am ilton (UWHH) has exceeded this year's $10 m il­ lion fundraising goal. The charity announced they had suc­ ceeded in raising $10,052,000 during a sold out gala event at the B urlington C on­ vention Centre held Tuesday, M arch 6. The event titled C elebrating Our Jou r­ ney recogn ized hundreds o f caring in d i­ viduals, engaged com panies and com ­ m itted nonprofits across the com m uni­ ty's ph ilanthropic landscape as w ell as the success o f the United Way's annual fundraising and com m unity im pact ef­ forts. "This year's goal is the first fo r United Way Halton & H am ilton. We knew with the support o f Burlington, Halton Hills, H am ilton, M ilton and Oakville, we cou ld reach that goal," said Brad Park, UWHH president and CEO to the charity 's sup­ porters. "You, and so m any other like-m inded people, stood up for the com m unity you care about most, and dem onstrated that together we can create a healthy and in ­ clusive place in w hich we can all live." The UWHH cam paign kicked o f f Sept. 16, 2017 at John C. M unroe H am ilton In­ ternational A irp ort with 250 com m unity partners engaging in the UPS Plane Pull Challenge. Team s were asked to pull a 200,000- pound A irbus A300, 50 feet across the tar­ mac. The am bitious task was the perfect way to reveal the am bitious fundraising goal o f $10 m illion. Participating team s succeeded in rais­ ing $25,000 fo r the cam paign that day. UWHH officia ls have em phasized m oney raised in each com m unity w ill stay in that com m unity and aid those liv ­ ing in poverty. "E very day, United Way Halton & H am ilton sees first hand the strength o f ou r com m unity, as it continues to dem ­ onstrate we are united by those w ho care for each other, just like a fam ily," said Park. "Through extraordinary levels o f gen ­ erosity, both in time and funds, you have ensured that a safety net o f supports w ill be available to us all, w hen we are faced with one o f life 's m any challenges." Park said it has been a w onderfu l first year for the UWHH and thanked the group's supporters fo r being such an in ­ tegral park o f m aking that happen.
