"The motion itself really fails to acknowledge the com ­ plexity o f our work as a charity and significant impacts that we have on the lives o f cancer patients and their fam i­ lies, through the broad body o f work that we do," said Ta­ nya Henry, vice-president o f the Canadian Cancer Soci­ ety's Relay For Life in Ontario. The Canadian Cancer Society does not currently fund em bryonic stem cell research, but has in the past. Such research could be permitted in the future if it "meets cer­ tain criteria and if that work holds the promise o f offering important inform ation that could reduce cancer deaths and diagnosis," Henry said. Henry said donations from the Halton Catholic school board could be directed to "areas o f research or other work that doesn't involve em bryonic stem cell research," such as support programs that helped m ore than 1,000 people in the Halton region last year. At the Halton Catholic school board meeting March 20, 16-year-old Deelan Sabido told trustees he was concerned students would no longer be able to donate to the organiza­ tion. "Students across the board raise thousands o f dollars for example, Relay for Life, because cancer has affected everybody in one way, shape, or form ," Sabido, a student at Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School in Milton, said. "And now we're being told that we may not even be able to do that because the Canadian Cancer Society may not be on the list o f allowed charities to donate to." The Catholic Children's Aid Society o f Hamilton is compliant with the new pol­ icy. "We accept donations from any indi­ vidual or any organization that shares our vision o f safe and thriving children and youth, empowered families, and stronger com m unities," said executive director Rocco Gizzarelli in an emailed statement. "We are grateful to the Halton Catholic District School Board for their continued support." The WE M ovement was also listed on the school board website as an organization compliant under the new pol­ icy. "Based on a request for information, WE Charity pro­ vided a response simply attesting that our programs do not cover any o f the services in question and therefore are not applicable," said Scott Baker, executive director o f the WE Charity, in an emailed statement.
