Oakville council voted to declare the seat vacant dur ing their Tuesday, April 3 meeting. The move follows the sud den resignation of Roger Lapworth, who held the seat since 2006. Lapworth announced his resignation last week citing personal reasons. With a municipal election coming on Oct. 22, Oakville Mayor Rob Burton noted that the timing of the resig nation means the position can only be filled by appoint ment. "We're past the point where the law allows us to have a byelection and before the point where we would be allowed to leave it vacant," said Burton. "You only have one choice and that is to appoint." With the seat now vacant council has 60 days to ap point someone to the posi tion. Town staff noted those in terested in filling the vacant seat can pick up nomination packages at the clerk's office in town hall and online at elections.oakville.ca begin ning Friday, April 6. An information session will be offered on April 18 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., for po tential nominees and will be made available for all inter ested candidates on the town's website after that date. All interested persons will be required to submit a nomination form and sup porting documentation such as a resume or expression of interest. All documents submitted as part of the application will become part of the public re cord and will be included as part of the agenda of a spe cial council meeting, which will be held May 7 at town hall to deal with filling the vacant Ward 4 seat. To apply for the role, an applicant must be a Canadi an citizen, 18 years of age or older and legally permitted to vote and hold municipal office. Candidates must live, own or rent property in Oak ville or be the spouse of an owner or renter. They must also submit 25 declarations of endorsement with their nomination forms. Applications will be ac cepted beginning April 13 until 4:30 p.m. on Friday April 27. During the May 7 meet ing each applicant will have five minutes to explain why he or she is the best candi date for the position. Council will then vote to appoint the successful candi date to fill the vacancy.
