Police allege the suspects have been exceedingly busy, not only in Halton, but across the GTA. "We estimate that approxi­ mately 70 families have been vic­ timized by having their homes broken into just here in Halton in the last couple of months," said Halton police Chief Stephen Tan­ ner. "Probably close to 400 resi­ dences were victimized across Toronto." Milinovich said the 70 local break-ins attributed to this group make up 52 per cent of Halton res­ idential break-ins so far this year. Of the 70 Halton break-ins 44 took place in Oakville, which ac­ counts for 57 per cent of the town's residential break-ins. While multiple individuals were caught on camera during some of these entries, Det. Sgt. Paul Foley said the investigation took a major turn when an Oak­ ville resident walking their dog witnessed one of these break-ins on March 2. Four subsequent warrants ex­ ecuted by Halton police in Missis­ sauga and Toronto in late March led to multiple arrests and the re­ covery of $2.7 million worth of property allegedly stolen during the break-ins. Some of that property was dis­ played during the Oakville news conference. Several tables within the po­ lice station community room were covered with rings, watch­ es, necklaces, earrings, purses and luggage. Other tables were blanketed with thousands of dollars in Ca­ nadian, American and European currency. One officer said that during the execution of one of the search warrants they discovered a purse that weighed 40-pounds because it was filled with watches. "My immediate reaction to these arrests is really one of satis­ faction," said Milinovich. "For me each piece of property that was seized represents a vic­ tim and a family that's had what should be their sanctuary intrud­ ed upon. I'm extremely proud of the idea that we can begin restor­ ing some of those feelings of safe­ ty among those victims by re­ turning property." The investigation was carried out with the assistance of the To­ ronto Police Service, York Re­ gional Police Service and the Canada Border Services Agency. All 14 individuals arrested during the investigations are from Chile and police said some do have criminal records there. It is unclear at this time whether these individuals were in the country legally and police said part of the continuing inves­ tigation would look at how they got into Canada. Police said the accused are be­ ing held in custody. Foley said more charges may be laid as the investigation con­ tinues. Those arrested include: Alva­ ro Castillo-Toutin, 29, Jorge Del Valle-Correa, 43, Maria Urrea Fi­ gueroa, 25, Mauricio Antonio Marchant Veas, 57, Vanlla Bal- bontin Villegas, 32, Italo Villegas Varas, 19, Andres Felipe Longton Vio, 24, Raul Barros Saez, 42, Fe­ lipe Hermosilla Lizama, 30, and Juan Montecinos Neira, 28. They face a number of charges including breaking and entering, possession of property obtained by crime, and possession of break and enter tools.
