Officials at Oakville‘s Petro Canada refinery are trying to determine how thousands of litres of highâ€"octane "alkylate" leaked from a storage tank to a holding area within the refinery last Friday morning. "The actual cause is still under investigation," said company spokesperâ€" son Bill Lewis. "Certainly we‘re concerned (it happened). It‘s not something we would have like to have happened." Alkylate is a "highâ€"octane" substance produced at the refinery and used to manufacture gasoline. Fire crews were able to contain the spill and prevent a potentially dangerâ€" ous situation, Lewis said. No one was injured in the spill, which occurred during a company holiday for office staff. The spill was discovered by refinery personnel during a routine inspecâ€" tion of the tank area just north of the refinery, which is manned on an aroundâ€"theâ€"clock basis. Lewis said.
