18 Grasscycling is a means to a healthier lawn V nless you're considering putting mud flaps on the U 'ol Briggs & Stratton, grass clippings are probably not uppermost in your mind. Nevertheless, the Town of Oakville is no longer picking up grass clip- pings because grass is not garbage. By keeping grass clippings on our lawns where they belong (Grasscycling), we will lower Oakville's collection costs and tip- ping fees by $500,000 every year. We will also extend the life of the Halton landfill and delay the time when we need a new one. This will save us present tax dollars and the future aggravation of choosing and developing a new landfill site. Grasscycling saves time and work. A recent study in Forth Worth, Texas, found that home- owners who quit bagging their clippings saved an average of 35 minutes per mowing or seven 10:30 tun. - Dr. Wm. In the '50s and early '60s - before any research was done - it was thought that you shouldn't leave clippings any more than the barber should leave your hair on his floor until it decomposed. Recent research, however, indi- cates that clippings belong on your lawn. Grasscycling will help prevent thatch build-up in the lawn. An ll- year study by the US. Department of Agriculture showed that thatch is composed primarily of grass roots, not clippings. Thatch is caused by over-water- ing and over-fertilizing and is aggravated by the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers which will kill the soil organisms that natural- il-A; TURF MANAGEMENT m; it takes me less than as to mow, and I can stand 1t it without dreading the lh ave to drag the mower CHURCH OF THE EPIPHANY Honorary Ammmuma: Pm: Can Fame: um: Gm! 7:30 RM. - Celebration of the Institution of the Lord's Supper. Grasscycling encourages these organisms and will help prevent thatch build-up. Some people worry that their grass will grow too fast, and if they don't bag clippings, they will have a hayfurld rather than a lawn. This is because most of us overfertilize, overwater, and over-mow our With grasscycling, you reduce your fertilizer needs by up to one- third because grass clippings con- tain nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium. Most lawns will do very well on 1/2 kilogram of nitro- gen per 1,000 square feet per year applied in early June and in mid- September. Research from Cornell University also shows that organic fertilizers stimulate natural soil organisms which will give you a healthier lawn. awns mu. Water deeply - when you are finished, the soil should be moist 6 to 8 inches deep; this should take about an hour. Do some testing on your lawn to determine what is right for you. MOWING The common error is mowing too short. Most lawns should be cut to 2 1/2 inches in the spring and fall and 3 inches in the sum- mer. Mowing once a week should be enough, most often means you are applying too much fertilizer and water. If you do have extra clippings, let them dry for a day or so, rake them, and apply them to your com- post or use them as mulch around shrubs and flowers. Grasscycling can be done with most mowers. If your present one is nearing the end of life, it pays to. replace it with a mulching mower which is specially designed to chow the grass clippings finely, making grasscycling even easier. In May, the clippings will hit the fan when the first bags are left. by the curb. There may be irate let- ters, complaints, and creative argu- ments opposed to grasscycling. I hope this doesn't happen. Grasscycling is better for our lawns (fertilizer), better for us (time, effort and money) and better for our neighbors (taxes and waste management).
