But on Friday, the day after April l, the rumor became official: After 13 years and two national championships, Allison was hand- ing over the reins of one of the province's most successful basket- ball programs to a guy who helped mock the Bruins out of this year's title hunt. Naciuk, 37, earned a berth in the nationals in Burnaby, BC., May 24-28, by capturing the women's 'B' division at the Ontario champi- onships in Brampton, recently. The resident of Burlington and former member of National Racquets (now Premiere Fitness), defeated Jennifer Southcombe of Toronto in the final, 11-5, 11-8, 10- ll, 11-5. Seeded first in the draw, Naciuk swept her first two matches en route to her fifth provincial title in the past six years. Last year her four-year string was interrupted when she was runner-up to Debbie Soberan of Windsor. Naciuk will also be defending the 35-and-over doubles title. Last year she won with partner Gail Sinicas of Toronto. The upcoming nationals, howev- er, will be Naciuk's last. She intends to turn professional right after and is eyeing the Canadian Pro-Am circuit, where weekend tournaments offer about $250 to winners. "There is no more competition for me at the national level," Naciuk explained. "l'm going to get whipped at the beginning (in pro) but that's okay. I'm looking forward to the chal- lenge." Naciuk's next tournament is the Ontario Masters (30-and-0ver) championships, April 23-25 in Mississauga. Spring sports fly 1nto actlon The shuttlecocks will be flying in the next couple of weeks in Halton high schools. In the opening of the spring sports schedule, the Oakville-based Volpe Division meet goes tomorrow? (Thursday) at Milton's E.C. Drury High School.
