Style was shunted to the rear in the rush for market share and profits. Last fall, I happened to be walking down the staircase in a hotel in Frankfurt. Set between marble columns was what I first thought was a Ferrari 246 with a spoiler. It turned out to be its high point with the Countach. While it retains a version of the hip line seen on the 929 sedan and RX-7 super- car, the Mystere is more languid, more ltalianate. A shape like this does not come from two committees thousands of miles apart. What is intriguing is the car feels wide when you sit inside; yet is some- how longer and thinner on its wheel- base from the outside. The seats are marvellous. You wouldn’t mind having a pair at home with a set of casters underneath. As has become something of a styling state- ment at Mazda, much thought has been the design prototype of what was to be introduced the next day at the Frankfurt Auto Show as the new MX-6. The instrument panel has a shape not unlike very early Scagletti Ferrari 250 TRs, again the California new age/retro styling taking hold. The rest is what we've come to expect from Mazda in the form of high quality switchgear. The optional leather interior does give the car a more sports-touring feel. It provides a break from too much plastic, no matter how rich, as noted in the 626 Cronos. Mazda Canada has two models the RS and the LS. The RS comes with the 2.0-litre, 16-valve four producing 118 hp found in the 1993, 626 Cronos fami- ly sedan. The Mystere LS shares the 2.5-litre V6 also offered in the 626 ES topline model. In the Mystere it produces 164 hp and 160 torques which Mazda claims (with a straight face) is equal to the turbo four found in the previous generation MX-6. My LS came with the four-speed HOD " body spoiler. Seat backs as well as other interior parts are made from lightweight, high strength carbon fibre composite mate- rial. Inside the cockpit are two mould- ed bucket seats with a seat-back fold- ing feature maximizing load-carrying capability within the 2+l seating con- figuration. I suppose this test has concentrated on style as opposed to getting you from' A to B, but that's what this car is about. There is a place for mind/eye beauty being more important than utility.
