Opera for the masses, of kids The students at Pine Grove School enjoyed an operatic performance of Cinderella, in English, last week. The kids were even taught a few lyrics before the presentation so they could participate in the production. And they asked some clever ques­ tions at the end of the performance, no doubt prompted by their parents and teachers after a week of exposure to opera leading up to the performance. During the question-and-answer period, the young audience learned that Cinderella was selected because it was already a story that the children would be familiar with. They also learned that the singers' colourful cos­ tumes reflected Ontario's multicultural society and included a kimono, a sari and African head gear. And, they dis­ covered that the Canadian Opera Company (COC) tours Ontario schools to "bring opera to as many people as possible." This is the eleventh year for the COC's Ensemble Studio to bring opera to elementary school children around the province. Two Oakville schools will have enjoyed the 45- minute abridged versions of either the The Magic Flute or Cinderella during this year's tour. Pine Grove hosted two separate performances of Cinderella and Fern Hill School will see The Magic Flute today (Wednesday). The COC's Ensemble Studio not only brings opera to new viewers but has been a training program for young professional opera artists since its inception in 1980. These performances are supple­ mented with Introduction to Opera workshops, teacher resource pack­ ages, and workbooks. "School students are the COC's future audience, so the tour is vital to the growth of opera in Canada," explains Richard Bradshaw, general director of the COC. "As well, it's always immensely rewarding to intro­ duce young peo­ ple to this excit­ ing art form. Our future is educa­ tion, education, education." Theatrefest a real bargain The Town of Oakville and The Oakville Players will present the one-act play festival, Oakville Theatrefest '99, on Sunday, May 23rd at The Oakville Centre for the Per­ forming Arts. The 2 p.m. showing will feature two plays, one by Imag- inus, and the other by the STA Players.
