Wednesday, May iy, ryyy THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 03 Photo by Graham Paine Kickboxer Nick Petroff demonstrates the form that carried him to a world title earlier this month during competition at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. World title By Norm Nelson BEAVER SPORTS EDITOR An instructor at the Ontario Centre for Martial Arts in Oakville is back on top of the world. Nick Petroff, a 26-year-old Milton resident, won a world championship bout earlier this month at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in light kickboxing. It was sanctioned by the KRANE martial arts body. "Like the WBC, they're a governing body for martial arts throughout the world," said Petroff. Petroff beat out a highly touted competitor from Quebec, Marcel Cantin. Light kickboxing, he explained, features con tinuous sparring. "There are no stoppages after shots are land ed and it's continuous motion, like boxing." Unlike boxing, "contact level has to be kept down." "You go full to the body, but not full to the head." Petroff said it was "a very exciting fight." "We traded heavily in the first and second round. In the> third round I guess I dominated to make it a good victory." A lot of people, he reiterated, had the first round going to his Quebecois competitor. In the second round, although they "traded power", Petroff believed he had the edge. "By the third round I was dominating the fight." Petroff will not have much time to savour the sweet taste of victory. Not only does he have a title defence in six months, but he intends to extend his world domination in the coming months with tentative bouts in South Africa in August and Spain in October. The purpose, he explained, is "to compete under another association's world title." for Petroff Petroff prepared for his world championship bout in the past few months by winning his sec ond Canadian national title in April as well as an international tournament in Boston in March that attracted half a dozen countries. Petroff has been in the martial arts for a decade and a half, and he started out competing in jiu-jitsu. The difference? "Jiu-jitsu is like kickboxing with throws. So you're allowed to punch, kick and throw." He culminated his jiu-jitsu career with a world championship. He moved into kickboxing seven years ago, joining the Ontario Centre for Martial Arts. "By coming to the Ontario Centre for the Martial Arts, I opened more doors not only in jiu-jitsu but kickboxing as well. I got to surround myself with excellent teachers and competitors." As a teacher at the OCMA, Petroff leads classes in cardio kickboxing, jiu-jitsu, rock climbing and general fitness. Besides that, he finds the time to train, typi cally six days a week, two or three hours a day. Besides his specific kickboxing training, he also lifts weights and runs. In preparation for the world championship bout he had a specific train ing regimen "to build up my explosive ability." One way was sprinting. Another was plyo- metrics. "You exert the muscle and then explode off the muscle," he explained. For example? "It's like I jump of a bench and then jump as high as I can." He is coached by two instructors from the OCMA, Sean Stewart and Muzamnal Nawaz, as well as Jim Flood of Hamilton. He's sponsored by A.T. Cross Pens in Oakville and GoodLife Fitness Club in Milton where he leads a recreational, non-contact kick boxing class each week.
