D6 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Check out Burloak Canoe Club this Saturday Burloak Canoe Club members are out on Sixteen Mile Creek in full force, training for a season packed with fun and competition leading up to the Canadian championships in August. Burloak has won this championship for the last two years. The club caters to all abilities and ages: the elementary group (8-14); high performance development and crew (15 years and older); and masters (25 and older). The Burloak Canoe Club will be holding another open house and registration for their spring and summer programs this coming Saturday (May 22), 9 a.m.-noon. Come down to the clubhouse on Navy Street and tour the facility and see first hand, national and Ontario level paddlers training on the water. But don't be intimidated. While the club has a stable of international athletes like 1996 Atlanta Olympic veteran Gavin Maxwell and Canadian Sports Hall of Famer (and a 1984 Los Angeles gold medalist) Larry Cain, the club is equally home to a huge contingent of grass roots paddlers, particularly in the masters divi sion where the camaraderie and social aspect is as important as the competitive aspect. For more information, call the club at 338- 8287. 'Testing conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Neha Kumar aiming to win the U -14 title (Continued from page D1) edge she has three main rivals. With one of them (Alisha Turner from Ontario), she has traded wins, each going a full five games. With another (Ashley Malenchak from Manitoba), she has lost in five games. And with the third highly touted competitor (Ashley Clackson), they have yet to hook up as she is from B.C. and so their paths haven't crossed yet. While Neha Kumar has had to blaze her own path, it certainly hasn't hurt to have such a talented sister. The two train a lot together. Neha said her sister will often help by playing just above the level of a com petitor she will face "just to give me a good match, and then sometimes she plays full out." They also do drills together. During the squash season, Neha Kumar will typically hit the courts five days a week. At this point, she said she doesn't really have a fitness regimen. Basically, it sounds like her exercise comes from being an active Grade 5 student. "After I play squash, I usually do sprinting on the courts and stuff. I really like to bike so I go biking a lot. "And then at school I do track -- long jump, high jump, ball throw. So I usually get all my fitness stuff from there. "Well, sometimes, before, I used to go on runs with my sister but then it sort of got tough to keep up with her and I started getting left behind. But I'm probably going to start doing it on my own soon." She is also involved in skat ing and swim ming at a nearby rec centre and also finds time for ballet and piano. Ruchika (Cont. from page D1) "Through the whole year I would say to myself, 'Is this all going to be worth it?' My parents said, 'We'll be proud of you just to have set the goal'." Not only has Ruchika enjoyed a stellar season on the court, but her younger sis ter Neha, a Grade 5 student at Heritage Glen, became the national champi on in the under 12 division, a feat accom plished by Ruchika at the same age (see story). At the nation al champi onships in Ottawa, Ruchika Kumar breezed by her two open ing opponents, with straight game wins over Anna Bishop (9- 0, 9-0, 9-2) and Michelle Smith (10-9, 9-0, 9-2). In the quar terfinals she got her first real test, facing Christi Leibel of Saskatchewan, seeded fourth, and she upset her in four games (8-10, 9- 3, 9-3, 9-5). Her fairy tale run finally hit a bump on the road when she lost her semifi nal to top seeded and eventual runaway cham pion Runa Reta of Ottawa in straight games (9-3, 9-2 and 9- 1) . But Ruchika bounced back in the bronze medal match to beat the above mentioned sixth seeded Andrea Lessard of Alberta in straight games '9-3, 9-3, 9*7).
