With such broad-based community backing, SALT is able to carry out its important mandate, which includes warn­ ing seniors of scams in all their appalling varieties. These include telephone fiauds and price-gouging for such work as sealing driveways. "Obviously there is a need," said Brown, who has had personal experience with those who have been victimized. Added Ribble: "What we have found fiom a police perspective is that crimes against seniors are growing since 1985." SALT and its members, however, fight back: one volunteer who carries out com­ puter work for the program and liaises with law enforcement agencies is 88 years old. Others are retirees fiom divergent back­ grounds who help in a variety of ways. The stakes are high. Seniors often fall victim to those overcharging for home repairs and other, more fraudulent, ploys. "Get someone you know to do the work," said Brown. "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." Phone scams are also popular. Ribble suggests seniors give out no personal iden­ tification nor any credit card information. Ask the solicitor to mail information to you and never rush into anything. Always check ID badges and credentials and don't take someone's word on phone numbers you're given - look them up yourself. "Our purpose is to reduce this kind of crime against the elderly," said Ribble. "You can't be too careful." In addition to periodic mall displays, these volunteers give crime prevention presentations at seniors residences, publish informative articles and host their annual Seniors Awareness Seminar. They also speak to service clubs, church organiza­ tions and such groups as Bell Pioneers. Volunteers also help with the police call-back system as well as the successful COPP (Communities on Phone Patrol) program. Members also act as advocates and have been rewarded with the flashing crosswalk lights at Church and Navy Streets and handicapped parking spots on Bronte Road south of Lakeshore.
