Over 300 young musicians - 230 strings, 50 woodwinds, 40 brass, and 10 percussion play­ ers - will represent orchestras from Halton, Brant, Durham, Hamilton, Kingston, Missis­ sauga, Ottawa, Sudbury-Sault Ste. Marie and Toronto. The players will receive intensive instru­ mental coaching by professional musicians (S ee 'F in a l' on page 21) Cellist is a drummer at heart By C a ro l B a ld w in ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR Sam Orr is a drummer bychoice and a cello player by default. But the cello serves him well - he plays it in the Halton Youth Orchestra (HYO) and will devote almost half of his summer this year to playing the cello at the Southern Ontario Chamber Music Institute (SOCMI) in Appleby Col­ lege and at the Interprovincial Music Camp in Parry Sound. "There's one month of summer school first," he says. "So, I get one week off this summer." Orr, 15, has been in the HYO for two years, but not consecutively - he played with the Mississauga Youth Orchestra last year. However, this Sunday he will participate in the ninth Ontario Regional Festival of Youth Orchestras Concert as part of the HYO. Orr, a Grade 10 student at White Oaks Secondary School, says he began his musical career at about age 3, but has switched instruments many times since then. Starting with his mom, a piano teacher, on her instrument of choice, he went through trombone and comet and even bass guitar, which he really liked, before settling on the cello. But it wasn't until last year when Orr went to high school that he found his calling as a musician, on the drams. And he plays percussion in the jazz band at school. But that's where it ends. He says his parents wouldn't think of letting him practise the drums at home. "I really like the drums a lot, but I'm not too good at them. I guess I like them because they are a chal­ lenge," he explains. "I've had no for­ mal instruction on drums. I only know what I've picked up myself." Cello is a different story. "I did my Grade 8 after two years. It was cool," says the award-winning cellist, explaining that he's currently study­ ing to take his Grade 9 cello exam next month. "The people who I was looking up to - now I'm quite beyond them (musically). I think that's pretty neat." And he'll get at least one school credit for his achievements with the cello. But to keep up to snuff, the young virtuoso rises at 6 a.m. so he will have time to give his cello the obligatory one-hour of practice.
