As a result, Tory MPP Gary Carr was on the defensive for much of the event which, despite the stakes, was attend­ ed by only about 60 people. Carr defended his gov­ ernment's posi­ tion, but also spoke out forceful­ ly in favour of free will and conscience. Unless members stand up for what's right - unless they represent the people who elected them, said Carr - the current party-line system will not change. "We must take the power back," he said. Oakville riding Liberal contender Kevin Flynn applauded Carr for voting against his government on sev­ eral occasions, but maintained that this is no substitution for a "government that listens." NDP candidate Sean Cain, who favours proportion­ al representation, echoed Flynn's sen­ timents. As an example he said 76% of Torontonians voted against amalgama­ tion only to have the Harris govern­ ment force it on them anyway. "We have to change bureaucracies into democra­ cies," said Cain. Some of them had been waiting since Tuesday in order to buy tickets to see one of the first screenings of Episode 1 The Phantom Menace' on May 19th. "It's Star War's, a cultural icon," said Gord Pitt, a 25 year-old Oakville resident who had been waiting in line since 10 p.m. Tuesday night. "It's the first movie I remember seeing at the the­ atre as a kid and one of the first memories I have in general." Teenagers huddled in groups to keep warm, staying amused during the long wait by playing cards and discussing their favorite moments of the Star Wars Trilogy.
