This year we have chosen Salma Chagani, from Grade 6, as our Student of Excellence. Salma's acade­ mic achievements, her par­ ticipation in so much of our school life (Student Secretary, Think, Bowl, School Newspaper, Basketball Sktlls) and her consistent positive attitude made her an obvious choice for all. Michael Saunders Brantwood Michael Saunders, a grade 5 student at Brantwood Public School, displays many of qualities of a natural leader. He con­ sistently and diligently puts forth an excellent effort in all areas of the program. Michael is an extremely kind and polite student who respects all members of the Brantwood learning community. He is extreme­ ly deserving of this recog­ nition. Kristine Snedden Brookdale Kristine Snedden, grade 8, demonstrates out­ standing qualities in all areas of Brookdale school life. She maintains an excellent academic average and her superior athletic skills make her a valuable asset on all our athletic teams. Kristine plays rep. hockey and is ranked the #1 goalie in Ontario for her age group in rep. soccer. Brookdale is proud of Kristine's accomplish­ ments in all facets of her life. Michelle Covi ' vvoss (South Campus) Michelle is a graduating honour student and has been a school-wide leader for all of her years at White Oaks. A student of high goals and values, Michelle has chosen to be involved in all aspects of school life. Michelleis list of accom­ plishments is most impres­ sive: Michelle has been our Students! Council Prime Minister; she is a student mentor; she is the student representative to our School Advisory Council; Michelle has been a mem­ ber of the cast of our Musicals; she is a leader and member of our Swim Team; Michelle has per­ formed volunteer work in the community and at school; and Michelle is a provincial calibre debater. Michelle is a wonderful example of how a well organized and dedicated student can make a positive contribution to school life. We are very proud of her and know that she will be successful as she heads off to university. Patrick Coster Chisholm Patrick Coster, a grade five student at Chisholm School, is an avid reader with many creative ideas. His many talents have allowed him to excel in cross country running, track and field, the Think Bowl competition and pub­ lic speaking. Being reliable and responsible, he is an excellent role model for his peers. Lauren La Caprara E. J. James Lauren La Caprara, a grade 8 student ,has demonstrated during her 3 years at E.J. that she is very involved through her par­ ticipation in the following: 3 years on the volleyball team, public speaking, Think Bowl, honour roll, year book executive, track and field, coach for grade 6 volleyball and assisting in tournaments. Lauren defi­ nitely represents what is meant by "Excellence" at E. J. James. Alison Chase Eastview Alison Chase Eastview Public School Alison Chase is an energetic Grade 8 student at Eastview PS. She has been recog­ nized for her academic achievement, citizenship and contributions made to the school and community. Her leadership skills deliv­ ered with a quiet voice and genuine smile have com­ manded much respect and admiration from everyone who knows her. Athena Kokonakis WOSS (North Campus) Athena is a graduating student who has taken a concentration in the Cosmetology program. Athena has exceeded all expectations in terms of technical knowledge and skill development. She recently won a silver medal in the Skills Olympics competition. But, it is not just for her program exper­ tise that she was selected. Athena has become a leader right across the school. She provides advice to senior students and is a mentor and role model for junior students. To our students she has become an icon in the classroom and to the teach­ ers she has become a sup­ port mechanism. Athenafs warmth, enthusiasm and radiant smile are an inspira­ tion to all students and staff. Athena has taken pro­ gram at both campuses and has established strong rela­ tionships with many stu­ dents. She has been involved in our school musicals and has provided many hours of dedicated service to our school. We are proud of Athena and are delighted to present her as our north campus excellent student. Celebration of Student Excellence The Halton District School Board honoured 85 students -- one from each elementary and high school -- for their achievements at Burlington Central High School last Thursday. The students were picked for displaying exceptional qualities in at least two of the following areas: academic, vocational and athletic fields, self- improvement, community work, citizenship and student leadership, or spe­ cific criteria that reflected the school's unique priorities. M ore than 500 parents, grandparents, principals, trustees, teachers, and school administrators attended the awards night. "This is an excellent opportunity to recognize the achievements and excellence of the young people in our schools today," said Ethel Gardiner, Chair o f the Halton District School Board. "It is through the ongoing efforts o f our dedicated staff, parents and community members, working coopera­ tively in partnership, that we are able to ensure Halton students receive the quality education that is needed to meet the challenges o f the future." "Student Excellence recipients represent the high degree o f student achievement in our schools," said Dusty Papke, Director o f Education for the Halton District School Board. 'T hese students are representative of the high degree o f excellence in all our schools within Halton. We have our future in our public schools today. Featured on this page are the Oakville recipients o f the Student Excellence awards and the reasons their schools gave for honouring the stu­ dents. Kathy Robertson T. A. Blakelock Kathy Robertson is an OAC student who dis­ plays an impressive depth and breadth of experi­ ences along with a consis­ tently high academic standing. Her co-curricular activities this year includ­ ed the Concert Band, School Reach and the Literary Magazine. Kathy is a lifeguard, she teaches swimming and is very active in her church. At the present time she is uncertain of her future goals but she plans to pur­ sue her education at the University of Western Ontario. Munn's Melissa Gismondi Munn's Public School Melissa Gismondi, grade 5, enjoys reading and writing both stories and poetry and has represent­ ed Munn's School at Think Bowl, Battle of the Books. Her outdoor interests include soccer and rollerblading. Melissa is an enthusi­ astic and responsible stu­ dent who is well respect­ ed by her peers. Marianne Robus QEP Marianne is a very active student: -- swim team -- volunteer for Waterfront Festival --Pathfinders -- 8 years in Guides -- volunteer for Multiple Sclerosis -- plays soccer -- model student both academically and social­ ly Wefre proud to recog­ nize her as our Student Excellence honouree. Stephanie Aguiar River Oaks Stephanie Aguiar is a grade 8 student at River Oaks Public School. She participates in track and the River Oaks Athletic Council; she is an accomplished artist, a public speaker, actress, All-Star Reading coach, primary helper and still maintains outstanding academic results. Never too busy to help peers or teachers, Stephanie is appreciated and respected by peers and teachers alike. She has always used her exceptional talents to make River Oaks a better place. Christopher Wills Sunningdale Christopher Wills is a Grade 5 student in the English Program. Christopher was chosen because he has demonstrat­ ed outstanding perfor­ mance in academics, ath­ letics, cidzenship and stu­ dent leadership. Sunny Grewal W. H. Morden Sunny, grade 8, demonstrates excellent student leadership. Consistently reliable and committed. Sunny's personal initiative has helped our Student Council sponsor amazing school spirit building activities. He is a model cirizen, respected by his teachers and his peers. Pilgrim Wood Lindsay is a Grade 8 student. She was an All Star Reading coach and volunteers in manly other activities around the school. She was on the hon­ our roll first and second term. Paul McKinlay Pine Grove Paul, a grade 6 stu­ dent, is a friendly, enthu­ siastic and outgoing young man who excels academically. He has also been very involved at Pine Grove as a Bus Patroller, Morning Announcer, Lunch Hour Referee and with sports, juggling and special events. Lynn Kane Sheridan Lynn Kane Sheridan Public School At all times Lynn, grade 5, has strived for excel­ lence in her all her acade­ mic work. Among her numerous non-academic involve­ ments include secretary of the student council, morning student announcer, student secre­ tary, and choir member. Lynn will be recog­ nized for her continuous outstanding work at Sheridan School. Rudi Ellis Falgarwood Rudi, grade 8, exempli­ fies the qualities of an out­ standing student both in her studies and in her support of Falgarwood activity. Rudiis extra-curricular activities include bus moni­ tor, peer tutour, school helper, morning announcer, volleyball, house leagues and concert band. Tom Adamyk Gladys Speers Tom Adamyk has been chosen as Gladys Speers last Student of Excellence for this Millenium! His interpersonal relationships and general demeanor make him a positive role model in his peer associa­ tions. Tom has consistently demonstrated strong acade­ mic performance as well as exemplary athletic abilities. His competitive "speer-it" has always been duly tem­ pered with a sense of sportsmanship and fair play. This year Tom took on the lead role in his class drama production and even managed to surprise him­ self with his success. Heritage Glen Julie Hoffmann, grade 8, is an excellent represen­ tative of the students of Heritage Glen because of her outstanding qualities as an excellent student and as a school and community citizen. Julie has shown leader­ ship in student council, school athletics and music. Outside of school Julie enriches her music talents as a member of the Toronto Children's Choir. Martine Fomoville OTHS Martine is a truly exceptional student. Academically, she is well- prepared, but what makes her a truly outstanding stu­ dent, though, is her extra­ curricular involvement. Students against Drunk Driving, Student's Council, The Music Executive: these are just a few examples of the kinds of programs Martine has contributed to. Over and above involvement, how­ ever, Martine has also demonstrated leadership. She doesn't just do, she leads! Because of her abil­ ity to get things done for O.T., she is our school's nominee for the presti­ gious "Student Excellence" award. She is also being recog­ nized by the Town for her efforts in anti-drinking and driving campaigns. To say that Martine exhibits the best character­ istics of a good O.T. gradu­ ate would accurately describe her contributions to the school. Katharine Stanbridge Linbrook Katharine Stanbridge Linbrook Public School Katharine, grade 5, demonstrated outstanding academic achievements and citizenship qualities. She is actively involved in many activities both inside and outside of school some of which include Cross Country, Choir, Think Bowl, Music and Soccer. Katharine's positive and friendly approach is valued and recognized by peers, staff and parents of the Linbrook community. Jordan Wathen Lome Skuce Jordan Wathen is a Grade 5 student at Lome Skuce Public School. In addition to her excellent academic achievements she has excelled in athlet­ ics, served as the school announcer and partici­ pated in other school activities. She is a quiet leader and role model for the students of Lome Skuce. David Berg Maple Grove Maple Grove is proud to have David Berg, grade 5, represent our school at Student Excellence Evening. David is a hard work­ ing student , who always tries his best and demon­ strates excellent citizen­ ship qualities each and every day. He is kind and caring, never leaving anyone out. Thevaki Ganesharajah Iroquois Ridge High School Thevaki Ganesharajah graduates from Iroquois Ridge High School this year as an Ontario Scholar and epitomizes the best of the Ridge. She has been an exec­ utive member of the Student Parliament for two years, co-editor of the yearbook in 1997/98, an organizing force behind our annual multicultural festival, a supporter of the arts, and athletics, writer on the school newspaper, and an assistant at Confer­ ences, orientation ses­ sions, and registration. She is a volunteer at O.T.H.S. and is an excel­ lent role model for others. She is a systems thinker and life long learner. She is a wonderful example of a student who sees things from a global perspective. Stephanie Wong Montclair Stephanie Wong, a Grade 8, honour student, a talented musician and a young lady who makes a positive contribution to the school each day. In the summer, she works at a camp for stu­ dents with hearing disabil­ ities. Anthony Pucillo New Central Whether working with the elderly at Oaklands Regional Centre, doing chores at the Salvation Army Thrift Store or refer­ eeing town house leagues, Anthony's community involvement exemplifies his outstanding value of citizenship. His energy and enthu­ siasm extend to his active school life where he main­ tains honours academic standings and participates in band, soccer, track and field, basketball and vol­ leyball. Anthony is in Grade 8. Anna Vlassova Oak wood Anna, grade 5, demon­ strates excellent academic achievement and a consci­ entious approach to her involvement in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. A new citizen to our country, Anna has involved herself with enthusiasm and commit­ ment in every school opportunity that is avail­ able to her. Silvia Kwon QEP Silvia is a very active student and active in the community as well.
