Wednesday May 12, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A7 C O M M E N T She's soccer coach's dream Psst...any o f you soccer moms and dads want to take over this summer? I have to admit I am completely at a loss: this black and white ball kicked around by alm ost 8,000 kids in Oakville last summer alone on soccer fields everywhere has me beat. And my daughter, poor soul, has to pay the price. By that I mean I have no idea about soccer. No idea at all. And so when it came for her first practice - this is a kid who has played baseball since she was six - 1 sent her off with the requi site shin pads and shoes and sat back, confident she was well equipped and happy she had the courage to wade into the unknown. After almost six years of baseball, she was restless; she wanted a faster-mov ing game, more like her beloved hock ey. But soccer? W hat do I know? I'm lucky I can get her to the right field....much less figure out another game. W hat the heck, it's a game, isn't it? Just kick some ball into a net. How bad can it be, I thought. So off we went to get some shoes and shin pads, truly hilarious when I really had no idea about what that was all about and almost bought tiny toddler pads. Little did I know she also needed something called socks. I know, I know. All o f you with 1,800 years of soccer under your belt, the ones who glance knowingly at each other about stuff like Manchester United and carded players (please....what does all o f that mean???), you know enough to send your kids off with socks. For heaven's sake, you'd say, shaking your head, how did you expect her to keep the shin pads in place? Well, I told her to simply strap them to her legs. . "Sure, you just want pro tection, right?" I said cheerily. Kate looked at me stone-faced. There she was, her mother waving her hands dismissively as she asked about how the shin pads connect - oh, dear, don't worry just strap the velcro to your legs - and sent her onto her prac tice. But luckily, uniforms were on hand and she spied socks at the bottom of the pile. Out she went onto the field. I stood, completely perplexed, as the girls went this way and that. I had already pretended to know what the coach was talking about as he pointed to this field over that one: 'T hat of course is the better field. That's where we'll be playing our games." O f course, I said, nodding, that's the better field. I scrunched up my eyes to have a better look. W hite posts, grass. W hat was the difference? But I kept quiet; already I was getting the reputa tion as not being the sharpest knife in the drawer. But I had to ask about offsides - I'd overheard them talk about offsides and I looked at them puzzled. I pulled myself up and asked what I thought to be a truly intelligent question....How can the girls tell they're off side if there are no lines. They looked, aghast and then out onto the field at Kate, sympa thetically, as if to say, "you poor dear." They spoke slowly: there are lines in the grass. Oh, I said, uselessly. Man, oh man, did I look dumb. So here's my plan: I'll sit quietly in the sun in complete ignorance. Unlike most o f the soccer moms and dads, I won't have any idea if there are good calls or bad calls or what strategy is happening on the field. A parent who knows nothing about the sport at all. I'll be a coach's dream. Not better off... Yes, I am better off today, but, no thanks to Mr. Harris who borrowed every penny to fund his tax cut. I am per sonally better off today after my wife and I made some very important and necessary econom ic changes paying down our debt Mr. Harris. I o t t o r e Ontario, we should all Letters |,e Very thankful for the tO the unprecedented economic E d i t o r s rovvth in the u s - ( ° ur largest trade partner), the intelligent U.S. monetary policies o f Alan Greenspan and our low Canadian dollar. They all had a massive impact on the Ontario economy. The Tories must not take credit for the economic growth of Ontario. Their tax cut has only left Ontarians with an unbalanced budget and an increased provincial debt o f $22- billion. At this rate, Ontario will be the last province in Canada to balance its budget. The government's 'Blueprint: Mike Harris' Plan to Keep Ontario on the Right Track' is certainly a Blueprint for more cuts to health and education, con fusion, disruptions, mismanagement, confrontation, budget deficits and an increased provincial debt. Are we 'better off today...' is an old (U.S. President Ronald) Reagan line. Please, ditch it! It is redundant, ineffec tive and untrue in describing our life in Ontario today.
