- Harbour scene with pier and several buildings. During the 1930s, Black trained in Gloucester, Massachusetts with two noted American marine painters: Emile Gruppe (1896 – 1978) and Stanley Woodward (1890 – 1970). Their mastery of harbour scenes and ships inspired him to create many paintings on these subjects.
