HOCKEY Defenceman looking forward to the challenge • C ontinued from page 53 Murray joined that group in novice. He led the way in a draft that would see all five of Oakville's defencemen se lected by the ninth round. A two-way defenceman whose strong skating abili ty, Murray said it will be strange to see his longtime teammates wearing an op ponent's sweater. "It's definitely is going to be different seeing them in a different jersey, but at the same time it will be really fun. It will be a friendly com petition for bragging rights." Murray said Hynes, Jaan Luik, who coached the team up to peewee, and defence coach Glen MacDonald all played a big role in helping the Rangers' defence suc ceed. Now he's ready to take what he's learned to the next level. "I'm definitely looking forward to the challenge of playing against older, faster guys," said the six-foot-two, 188-pound defender. "I'm go ing to be pushed every time on the ice. I'm going to have to be on top of my game against guys who have been in the league for a few years." One pick after Murray, the London Knights selected Evangelista, a dynamic of fensive player, who had 41 goals and 96 points in 39 games. The Knights invited him to a game earlier this season and he left im pressed. "It was a thrill, just seeing how much the fans care about the team and what the atmosphere was like at the Budweiser Garden," he said. "When London scores, the whole building shakes." So when the London's pick came up in the first round, Evangelista crossed his fingers and hoped he'd made an impression on the Knights as well. As he head ed to London to meet with team officials, Evangelista tracked the draft on his phone. "It was so exciting watch ing those names fly off the board," he said. Also selected from the Rangers were Ethan Ritchie (fifth round, Erie), Marco Latassa, (ninth round, Ow en Sound), Ryan Brown (11th round, Hamilton), Chase Strychaluk (12th round, London), Tyler Borkiewicz (14th round, Kingston) and Patrick Stewart (15th round, Mississauga). Oakville players selected from GTHL teams included McKay Hayes (fourth round, Windsor), Marco Costantini (fifth round, Hamilton), Anthony Cos tantini (sixth round, Otta wa) and Robert Strachan (eighth round, Hamilton). As Hynes continued to see Ranger players taken in the draft, his joy was some what constrained. "Once you start to get up to a certain number, you start to feel worse for the guys who don't get picked," the Rangers' coach said. "But I told them, this is just the first window of opportu nity. I wouldn't be surprised if all three got picked in the (under-18) draft next year. They just have to keep work ing hard."
