OPINION ANIMAL TALES 'Together, we are stronger': Canadian Cancer Society thanks volunteers In this fast-paced world where everyone is busy with personal and profes sional commitments, it takes a caring individual to volunteer their time and energy to organizations in their communities. Fortunately for the Ca nadian Cancer Society (CCS), there are approxi mately 130,000 caring peo ple who have chosen to share their time with us. This National Volunteer Week (April 15-21), we rec ognize the incredible vol unteers in Halton. From selling daffodils during Daffodil Month, to helping at Relay For Life, or assist ing with the CIBC Run for the Cure, our volunteers do it all. Maybe they drive can cer patients to their medi cal appointments; share experiences as a cancer survivor with others facing a similar diagnosis through our peer support programs; or perhaps they advocate to your local gov ernment for healthy public policies. Whatever role our volunteers take on, we are making an impact because of their dedication and compassion. During a year of trans formation at CCS, we are so grateful for our volunteers' continued commitment and passion to our cause. It's thanks to our volun teers that CCS has been able to continue to deliver on our mission from coast- to-coast. Our volunteers enable us to invest in the best can cer research across the country, provide trusted cancer information and compassionate support services to people facing cancer and their families, and lead cancer prevention and advocacy initiatives. This week we recognize our volunteers, but all year round our volunteers truly demonstrate that together, we are stronger. Sandy McDonald, co ordinator, volunteer engagement Canadian Cancer Society, Halton Community Office Heart & Stroke grate ful for the support of its volunteers The Heart & Stroke Foundation would like to take this opportunity dur ing National Volunteer Week, April 15-21, to ex press its gratitude to the thousands of volunteers who support the founda tion across Halton. From countless volun teers who go door-to-door during our canvass cam paigns in February and June to our students and teachers who participate in the Jump Rope for Heart, the riders who hop on the 30-seat big bike and pedal around town and those who organize location community events to fund raiser on our behalf, and of course, our committed and dedicated in-office volun teers who show up week af ter week to support our of fice in raising awareness and engaging the commu nity, we thank you. Together, you helped us raise almost $1 million in Halton to support life-sav ing breakthroughs in heart and stroke research, as well as save lives and raise awareness in promoting prevention and healthy and active living in our community.
