NEWS Oakville recognizes National Day of Mourning No one should say good­ bye to a loved one as they leave for work and never see them again because o f a preventable death. That's the belief behind the National Day o f Mourning, an annual day o f remembrance for work­ ers who have been killed or injured on the job in Cana­ da. The Oakville and Dis­ trict Labour Council w ill commemorate the day with a public gathering at the workers' memorial out­ side Oakville Central L i­ brary (120 Navy St.) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Apr. 28. "We invite all residents o f Oakville to join us on this solemn occasion," said T im Batke, second vice president, Oakville & Dis­ trict Labour Council, who's organizing the event. "It's important to re­ member those who lost their lives on the job, and also to educate people so that no more lives are needlessly lost in the work­ place." Labour leaders, local politicians, members of the business community and concerned local resi­ dents w ill be in attendance at the ceremony. The event w ill feature several guest speakers who w ill share stories o f personal loss, while offer­ ing a reminder o f the im ­ portance o f safety in work­ place. Said Oakville & District Labour Council president Dave Millar, "It's so impor­ tant for our residents to not only observe the Day of Mourning, but also use the day as a way o f educating themselves and their fami­ lies that they have the right to say no (to unsafe work conditions), and they do no have to put their lives at risk when at work."
