This year's theme, "Be Emergency Ready: Stay Connected", focuses on the Ontario Emergency Warning System, which can now send alerts directly to supported mobile devices. You may receive a test message from the Province through the system on May 7, but in a real emergency, the Province and the Region can use this technology to advise you to get to safety. If a community emergency requires you to leave your home, we may open an evacuation centre in your municipality to provide temporary shelter. Elalton's emergency management plans and programs ensure that essential Regional services remain available when you need them most, but you can also prepare for emergencies by following three simple steps: know the risks, make a plan and get a kit. Being prepared supports first responders by helping them focus their efforts on those in immediate need during a crisis. May 1 was First Responder's Day in Ontario, and the Region is proud to recognize the dedicated paramedics, police officers and firefighters who help prevent and respond to emergencies in Elalton. Gary Carr, Regional Chair Make an informed decision at the polls On June 7,2018, voters will cast their ballot in the 2018 Provincial election to elect Members of Provincial Parliament (MPPs) and the Premier. MPPs are our partners in securing funding and legislative changes that address challenges in our community, and Regional Council works with them to advocate for solutions on your behalf. To help residents make an informed decision on Election Day, Halton will send a questionnaire to candidates running in each of our local ridings. The questionnaire asks them to indicate their position on key issues and how they would address the issues if elected. These issues include confirming regulatory roles in the proposed CN truck-rail hub and investing in roads and infrastructure to support growth targets, mandatory public health programs to close the $9.3 million funding gap, new technologies and performance enhancements for area CACCs, and safe, affordable and accessible government housing. Candidate responses will be posted on halton.ca/ontarioelection2018 as we receive them. All levels of government must work together to preserve Halton's high quality of life and protect taxpayers from the cost of Provincially mandated growth.
