Be prepared for an emergency During Emergency Preparedness Week, May 6-12, the Town of Oakville is reminding residents of the Personal Emergency Preparedness Guide, put together by Halton Region, which outlines easy-to- follow tips to reduce the impact of an emergency or significant event on them and their families. 3 Be prepared to cope for 72 hours Residents should be prepared to cope on their own for a t least the first 72 hours, three days, of an emergency while rescue workers help those in urgent need. Have an emergency survival kit handy An emergency survival kit for the home should contain a three-day supply of food and water, flashlight, batteries, crank radio, first-aid kit, matches or a lighter, cloth ing and blankets. A smaller survival kit for the car should contain battery cables, warning light or flares, blankets, road maps and a first-aid kit. Keep up-to-date on current conditions During emergencies, residents are encouraged to keep up-to-date on current condi tions, such as the weather, tha t might have an impact during an emergency. Smart phones can be kept charged with solar-powered, crank or vehicle phone chargers, and steps can be taken to conserve the battery by reducing screen brightness, using airplane mode and closing applications. Watch out for wireless public alerting on wireless devices A new emergency alert system (Alert Ready) came into effect April 6 for sending life-threatening emergency alerts to cellphones and wireless devices tha t are com patible with wireless public alerting (WPA).
