Members of St. Jude's Garden Guild have been busy digging up and potting perennials for the sale, said garden guild president Mickie Angas. For the most part, the plants come from the gar dens of parishioners, fami lies and friends, and include a wide range of varieties such as: bachelor buttons, black-eyed Susan, salvia, day lilies, Jacob's ladder, Japanese forest grass, lav ender, Canterbury bells (campanula and white clips), lupines and primula. "Everything is resilient, coming out of our church member gardens, or the gardens of friends of the church," Angas said. "Peo ple will be getting good stock perennials and we know what we're selling." That's good news for new gardeners and seasoned green thumbs as well. Angas said it means that people can ask Guild mem bers about specific condi tions, such as whether their soil is clay or sandy, or if they have a shade garden, or full-sun. "We talk to them about what colours they like and if they're a new gardener, we make recommendations of something not so picky," she said. "For instance, per haps a peony is easier than a rose." The garden guild con sists of some 30 members, but more volunteers are al ways welcomed. They meet on Thursday mornings, or afternoons, according to the season, with a goal of main taining the church's beauti ful gardens. Sheridan Nurseries has been a longtime supporter of the sale, with the dona tion of plants; this year, it's clematis. The sale also includes many kinds of herbs includ ing: Italian oregano, chives, coriander, marjoram, and several varieties of basil, thyme and parsley. St. Jude's Garden Guild was formed in 1983 and is self-funded. Originally, it began as a project to take a dandelion-strewed field and turn it into what you see to day -- lush and colourful gardens. Proceeds from the sale, which has been ongoing for 30 years on the second Sat urday of May, go to support the group for the year, in cluding supporting the gar den and replacing memori al plants occasionally. They also have to upkeep the irri gation system from time to time. Prices are competitive, Angas added. There are some peonies this year that are $7/pot. "That's probably half the cost compared to the nursery." They ask shoppers to bring their own boxes to transport plants home.
