Since 1984,15 children died by strangulation after hav­ ing wrapped a blind or curtain cord around their neck. Health Canada recommends keeping cords out of the reach of young children by cutting or tying-up the cords or by installing safety devices which are available at hard­ ware stores or places that sell curtains and blinds. Additionally, cribs, children's beds and playpens should never be placed near windows or patio doors. Property maintenance an award winner Paul Wouters Landscaping and Maintenance of Oakville, has won an Award of Excellence from Landscape Ontario. The award was for private residen­ tial maintenance on a 15,000 sq. ft. east end property. The object of the design was to draw the eye to different parts of the garden and to deal with its vastness by breaking it into gardens at slightly dif­ ferent levels. The eye flows freely along the enclosed walkway, gathering the colours an'd textures of the assorted perennials, specimen shrubs and annu­ als. it then opens into a paved patio area, effectively an extension of the home with outdoor furniture, speakers, statuary, barbecue, pond and waterfall. Traveling down a level brings the visitor to another patio area with a view of the lake and luscious turf area, sur­ rounded on both sides by perennials and evergreens. When the border plant­ ings are not in bloom, their leaves pro­ vide a variety of shapes, textures and colour. Due to the enclosed nature of the site, maintenance is extraordinarily labour intensive since access to larger mowers and other equipment is limit­ ed. Disposal of all garden debris must be done by hand. Keeping notebook helps flower selection The spring flowers are peaking this month. Tulips and daffodils join the fading crocus, scilla and snow drops to fill the garden with colour. It is the time to take note of blank areas and resolve to purchase bulbs in the fall to fill the spaces next spring. For now, plant; some pansies. Many garden­ ers will not remember in the fall to buy tulips for specific areas and what colours they need to fit into the spring landscape. This will never be a problem if someone in the family keeps a note­ book.
