R emember when your mother rushed to the jungle gym and rescued you right before you fell off? Or when she sensed you were having trouble at school with out you saying anything? How about when her advice on your relationship - advice you didn't want to hear - turned out to be bang on? Call it mother's intuition, a heightened version of the so-called women's intuition. Perhaps, the title of the old fifties TV show should have been "Mother Knows Best." The subject of intuition has received lots of attention lately. Look at the runaway success of intuition expert Laura Day. Her four books, includ ing Practical Intuition and Practical Intuition for Success, have each been huge bestsellers. Business executives and celebrities pay Day up to $5,OCX) a session to guide them on important deci sions, and she has been featured on the Oprah Winfrey show and in the pages of People maga zine. Carlton Cards knows something about mothers, and about intuition too. In fact, a new line of cards is called intuitions, and includes more than 20 designs for Mother's Day. The cards are so-named because their clever photos and intuitive one-lines evoke the kind of surprised "aha" sensation people feel when they have a sudden premonition or insight about something. One of Carlton's intuitions cards, for example, recognizes Mom's sixth sense in a playful way. sense things like problems in a relationship (before the signs become obvious), and might be more attuned to their children. Nadel's book says men and women also feel the spark of intuition differently - warmth in the chest for men, and a tightening in the stomach or diaphragm for women. So don't dismiss that queasy feeling. By following your intuition, you could be making the right decision about family, work, and any other of life's challenges. Of course, you can't use your intuition unless you confirm that you have it. Remember, it's only intuition if you end up being right! Some intuition experts suggest keeping a log or journal of your gut feelings, and checking it to see which of your instincts turned out to be correct. "A journal could be a great Mother's Day gift for the woman who wants to leam more about her intuition and explore ways to use it," says Wigoda. "It can help any mother recognize and start to har ness the power of her intuition even more." As the leader in the Canadian social expressions industry, Carlton Cards says it best with a broad range of greeting cards and accessories. These products are marketed under the brand name of Carlton, Forget Me Not, and for the French-speak ing market, Entre Nous. Carlton Cards operates two plants in Ontario and employs more than 2,000 people across Canada. Visit the website at www.carltoncards.ca. The photo on the front shows a skinny little boy wearing nothing but shoes and socks and a huge, adult-sized sweater pulled up over his face. Inside it reads, "Happy Mother's Day from I didn't do it." Another card plays up the unique, intuitive bond between mother and child by zooming in on the face of a crying baby. The eloquent one-line message inside? "I want my mommy!" According to Kendall Wigoda, corporate commu nications director for Carlton Cards and the mother of two young sons, intuition can play out in all sorts of ways - whether it's making the right call about your kids, "having a feel ing" about what someone is about to do, or just knowing which check-out lane will move the fastest at the grocery store. "When I get an intuitive feeling about my own family, I've learned to trust it," Wigoda says. "It's tough to explain why, but it's almost always right on target. It probably has something to do with the whole nurturing bond mothers develop, as we're raising our children." Mother's Day may be the perfect time to thank your mom for her intuitive powers, but is there legitimately such a thing as women's intu ition? Some experts believe there is. In her book Sixth Sense, Laurie Nadel says the physio logical differences between the genders can affect intu itive capabilities. The right hemisphere of the brain processes an intuitive thought as an image, like a "vision," while the left hemisphere process es it verbally, resulting in the "aha" type of feeling. Nadel says that when intuition occurs, the right hemisphere also signals the brain to produce a physical sen sation. Here's where mothers and other women have the "intuition." The network of fibres linking _____ the hemispheres is larger in females, leading to faster response times. That might make women more adept at combining their intuitive and logical sides.
