This three-day celebration, called Hilaria, started on the Ides of March. • Early Christiandom celebrated Mothering Sunday on the fourth Sunday in Lent, worshipping Mary, Mother of Christ. • In England, Mid-Lent Sunday evolved into Mothering Sunday. As part of an early custom, young men and women, who were employed as servants, gave their mothers special treats called "mothering cakes." • Julie Ward Howe made the first-known suggestion for a Mother's Day in the United States, 1872. She suggested June 2nd be observed as a day dedicated to peace. • In 1907, on the second anniversary of her mother's death, West Virginian Anna Jarvis launched a campaign to establish a nationwide day commemorating mothers. The holiday became official in 1914. • Anna Jarvis also introduced the carnation as the official Mother's Day flower because her mother was fond of them. Carnations, like mothers, symbolize sweetness, purity, and endurance. Today, we wear red carnations in honour of a liv ing mother, white for a mother who is deceased. • By 1987, more than 25-million cards were being sent each year in Canada. R oyal LePage announces Shelter F oundation Upholding an 86-year tradition of charitable work and donations from the local and national level, Royal LePage Real Estate Services Ltd. announced the formation o f the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation, a national foundation dedi cated to supporting shelters across Canada. The Foundation is committed to donating $1-million over the next three years. Based on a three-year cycle of focal programs beginning this year with women's shelters, the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation will raise funds, work to increase public awareness of the issues creating the need for shelters for abused women, and assist in the educational process of prevention of violence. "Royal LePage has always sought ways to enhance and strengthen our involvement in the communities we work and live in. After extensive con sultation with the Royal LePage team coast-to-coast who expressed over whelming support for shelters, we rec ognized that a focused approach to this charitable program would generate out standing results," said Simon P. Dean, president, Royal LePage Real Estate Services Ltd. "With the commitment from our offices and affiliates and through our alliance with the Canadian Women's Foundation, a national foun dation that helps prevent abuse of women, we are committed to realize our goal of $1-million on behalf of women's shelters." Many Royal LePage offices and sales representatives already have existing partnerships with local women's shel ters, which will be enhanced through the concentrated efforts of the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation. This program will be initiated this Mother's Day weekend, May 8th and 9th. Donation boxes will be located at our offices at 326 Lakeshore (and Reynolds) and 251 North Service (Dorval) offices.
