Group helping mentally ill STRIDE back to workplace B y Am ber Clarke SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER People recovering from mental illness who want to return to the workforce are being sup ported by a program called STRIDE- Supported Training and Rehabilitation in Diverse Environments. STRIDE provides a realistic work environ ment for people recovering from psychiatric ill ness. Clients work on-site, completing con tracts for assembly and packaging work. Appropriate work and social skills are re-estab lished to support re-entry into the competitive work place. "Our clients re-establish their social skills and work habits," explained STRIDE Executive Director Ellen Balkan. "We facilitate such things as their self-confidence, self esteem, and communication and negotiation skills." Formerly The Halton Work Programme, STRIDE celebrated it's official name change and program focus during a recent open house at the Oakville workshop location. STRIDE workshops are also located in Burlington and Acton. The STRIDE program believes that work in an integral part of the overall rehabilitation process. In addition to contract work, STRIDE offers community placements and supported employment. However, the workshop setting continues to be the largest component of the program. At any given time, 45-55 clients are registered. They work full or part time hours depending on their interest and abilities. Clients are paid on a piece rate basis. A variety of companies and contract work keep STRIDE clients busy. Right now Alcon Canada Pharmaceuticals is STRIDE'S largest contract, making up approximately one third of all the work. The goal is to enable clients to rejoin the work force, return to school, or participate in community volunteer opportunities. "We are enablers," said Patrick Fusaro, a vocational support worker at the Oakville loca tion. "We help people to realize the skills they have and to discover new skills, and we take them to the next level." Contract sales make a significant contribu tion to the organization, and STRIDE quotes and bids on all contracts. Balkan explained STRIDE receives 48% funding from the provincial and municipal governments, and finances the other 52% of the organization through revenue generated from contract work. "This job is so rewarding for me, I wouldn't trade it for anything," said Laurie Little, a voca tional support worker at the Oakville location. "People change, it may take some time, but I see good things happening. Its great to see their skills improve."
