Sunday, May 16, 1999 Oakville Beaver Weekend 21 FOCUS ON TRANSPORTATION TIPS FOR SAFER NIGHT DRIVING Up #1: Look as far ahead as you can. If you can see an object that might present a hazard, assume that it will, and slow down until you are absolutely certain it is not a hazard. Keep your windshield clean. A windshield that is dirty inside or outside causes glare, decreasing visibility. Windshield wipers that leave streaks or chatter across the windshield also decrease visibility and should be replaced. Clean properly aligned headlights are also very important for identifying hazards. Tip #2: Avoid over-driving your headlights. When an object becomes illuminated by your headlights, you should be driving slow enough to stop your car safely without hit ting it. Tip #3: Make sure other drivers can see you. Keep your tail-lights, turn signals, and brake lights clean and in good working order. It only takes a moment to walk around the car to check these systems. Have someone sit inside the car to operate the lights, brakes and turn signals. Or it's easy to check yourself in an enclosed area. Use your high beams, but don't forget to dim them for on-coming traffic or cars in front of you. Tip #4: If a driver coming toward you is using high beams, flash your lights quickly with the dimmer switch. If the driver fails to dim the lights, look toward the right side of your lane. This will keep you from being blinded by the otjier car's headlights. You should be able to stay on course until the car passes. Tip #5: Don't drive tired. Fatigue diminishes responsive ness needed for safe night driving. If you absolutely have to drive tired, pull off the road, where it is safe to do so, and rest several times during your trip. Remember, it's better to arrive late and safe than not at all. Many of these safe-driving tips apply during daylight hours as well. Also remember to buclde up, and insist that your passengers buckle up too. From $ Q 7 9 5 MOST $ 7 7 9 5 O / E ? Jonkman ADVERTISING FEATURE Road safety. It's not something we spend a lot of time thinking about unless it's affected our lives directly, or we're on the road and someone makes a move that angers us. Hopefully these things will never hap pen, but statistics tell us that they do. The best plan to be a safe driver -- or collision-free -- is to be proactive and be prepared. This is the philosophy behind the courses taught at YOUNG DRIVERS for beginner drivers, and through their Collisionfree!™ course for drivers licenced 'class G2' and above. "Collisionfree is a division of YOUNG DRIVERS International that offers driver improvement programs for the general public, for people exit ing the G2 phase of graduated licensing and for corporate fleets," explained Tim Danter, centre director of Young Drivers in Oakville, and co-chair of the Oakville Road Safety Coalition. Anyone interested in improving their driving skills can learn defensive driving habits -- or as Danter likes to call them -- 'Collisionfree habits.' "Our education is designed to take a proactive approach to road safety," said Danter. "We train people how to pre dict what's going to happen, so they can prevent a collision." If a driver is aware of what's hap pening two blocks ahead of them, they have much more time and space to make the correct driving decision. The Collisionfree program also takes clients through various situations to demon strate what is the safest (and most defensive) way to handle them. They also prove why. When a new driver applies for their beginning level permit, or G1 licence, they are given a deadline of five years in which they must successfully com plete two graduating road tests that pro mote them to a full G-class licence. April 1, 1999 saw the fifth year anniversary of the inception of the graduated licensing program, and with* it a back log of approximately 150,000 G2 level holders (as of Feb. 1999) who (See page 24) Your Neighbourhood Drive Clean - Clean Driving Centre LUBE, OIL & FILTER plus FREE 15 point inspection (Excludes diesel engines.) s ' * 6 9 9 9 TUNE-UPIncludes spark plugs, tim ing check, clean battery terminals, road test, inspect ignition cables, PCV system , air & fuel filters (4 cylinder) y * i9 99 INTERIOR DETAIL EXTERIOR WASH Full interior detail plus com plete interior sham poo & stain removal.
