Apprenticeship is an agreement between a person who wants to learn a skill and an employer who needs a skilled worker. Both the apprentice, the person who learns, and the employer who trains benefit from an apprenticeship. Canadian skilled workers, trained through apprenticeship, have been part of the teams that built: the space arm on the United States' shuttle craft; and the new Air Canada Centre. Skilled workers also bake bread, fix cars and help build sophisticated manufactured products. Apprenticeship training is an investment in your future. This investment is a partnership shared by the apprentice, the employer who pays the apprentice's wages, and the Ontario government, which regulates training through the Ministry of Education and Training. At the end of training, the apprentice becomes a fully-qualified tradesperson with skills that can provide her or him with a rewarding career. The employer gains a skilled worker who can help the company succeed. Why should I choose a skilled occupation? Apprenticeship doesn't just prepare you for a job; it prepares you for a career as a skilled worker. It offers satisfying work at a good salary, and the security of having skills that are more in demand every year. Many skilled workers use their skills and experience as stepping stones toward a career in management, while others go into business for themselves. How can I tell it I would make a good apprentice? If you have your high school diploma or some advanced maths and sciences education, have the ability to work out problems, and deal well with people, you already possess many of the qualifications employers want when they hire apprentices. If you're in high school, ask your counsellor about the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program. The program gives you the opportunity to work towards an apprenticeship while getting your high school graduation.
