V Sunday, May 16, 1999 School safety policies under reviewM Oakville Beaver Weekend By Dennis Smith SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Hal ton's public board is making efforts to prevent school shootings like recent ones in Littleton, Col. and Taber, Alta. Education director Dusty Papke said such incidents, where students mur dered their peers, can lead to copycat occurrences or threats. "We haven't had any recently, but there have been instances where threats have been uttered," he told a recent board meeting. "I've directed all princi pals to treat threats seriously and to call police, suspend the students and call parents." Papke said principals have been asked to review their safety policies. "The board has safe schools policy planning for staff, parents and stu dents," said Papke. "All schools have to develop safe schools policies." The director said he had a discussion with Halton Regional Police Chief Ean Algar and was assured police will respond quickly to any threat. "We walk a fine line when we're dealing with these incidents," said Papke. "We don't want to make schools prisons or jails but, at the same time, we want to ensure a high level of safety for students." Board chair Ethel Gardiner said she had a couple of reasons for raising the topic of school safety. "With students being murdered in Colorado and out west, the questions are in everyone's mind," she said. "It would be foolish to think this could never happen in Halton." Oakville trustee Lynn Roberts said it's important to deal with core issues affecting students' behaviour. "You have to treat the causes and not just respond to symptoms," she said. «000 ANY FILM Vfc,~ ANY TIME C IN E P L E X O D E O N f c s a j s S CINEMAGUIDE - ShoutiinvM lIiilm - Mav ' - M.i\ I » I 'm ADVERTISING CORRECTION In our Home Living/Summer Sale insert (promo #687) included in this newspaper.
