August 1, 1973 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 19 Top badm inton coach conducts special clinic classes A young hockey player would unquestionably be delighted to have some personal instruction from the Montreal Canadiens' ace former coach Toe Blake. ^ B u d d i n g foo t ba l l players would jump at the chance to be instructed by Miami Dolphins' coach Don Shula. Well, for badminton enthusiasts, Maurice Robinson holds a position equally esteemed as hockey's Toe or football's Don. Robinson, a native of E n g l a n d , c a m e to Oakville last week to conduct a series of classes on badminton for a number of specially selected players from across Ontario. Robinson has coached several world champion players including several English champions and a world champion from Germany and Holland. He has also coached Peewees score upset First place, previously undefeated Chinguacousy was upset by the Oakville Added Touch minor peewees in Halton-Peel minor soccer action last week. The 1-0 shutout gave Oakville second place in the standings with a record of four wins, three losses and two ties. Oakville carried the play throughout most of the game and could conceivably have come up with a bigger win. Their goal came in the second half on a shot by Carlo De Blasio. He was put into scoring position on a pass from Jeff Otto who put in a fine game effort. Raymond Hermann also made a consistent performance playing on the forward line. Credit for the shutout was due in part to the great effort of goalie Paul Thompson. several national teams which have dominated the sport in recent years. He is currently the Nat ional Badminton coach of England and conducts a continuing program of badminton instruction in the English University system. He comments, " It was one of my great thrills when two players who took their coaching under me went on to become English champions and eventually met head-on in the final of the world championship. These young men had been o v e r l o o k e d in the selection process for tournament badminton players in England because they hadn't won any championships. I saw that they had potential wh i c h wa s b e i n g overlooked." The first Canadian stop for Robinson was York University where he headed a badminton seminar conducted by the York Department of Physical Education and the Ontario Badminton Association. The OBA is footing the bill for Robinson's visit and this is where the Oakville sessions fit into the picture. The OBA capitalized on the ava i l ab i l i t y of Robinson by enticing him to teach a special course on b a d m i n t o n to Ontario's 12 top juniors juniors and seniors. The classes were held at the Oakville Club because of the excellent facilities there. They are Dave de Belle, Debbie Robinson, Ian Johnson and Jeff Kent. Each of them holds or shares at least one Ontario junior badminton title. They formed the contingent which won six of 10 events they entered in the Ontario Badminton Junior championships held last February in Toronto. In the senior division, open champions Jamie McKee and Nancy McKinley are attending. The training clinic is rigorous and the students are finding Robinson a hard-driving mentor. A typical training session finds the players fielding shots in rapid fire. Anyone breaking up the routine with a missed shot can look forward to 10 push-ups. When you're hitting a few thousand shots a day it pays to be on your toes. Miss Debbie Robinson, co-holder of the Ontario mixed doubles junior title is happy to have the opportunity to train under Robinson. "Every coach has his own way of teaching and you have to decide on your own which method is best for you. In Mr. R o b i n s o n 's c l a s s everyone is doing it his way. Robinson himself is enjoying the clinic as well. He paid a fine tribute to the team of juniors and seniors: "They are one of the most enthusiastic groups I have ever trained. When the seniors are on the courts they just about have to be carried off because they workso hard." With a tournament in Ottawa coming up in early August it will be interesting to see if Robinson's training will pay off. He will be back to England after his four, week Canadian stay to prepare for the upcoming uni ver s i t y p r o g r a m which he heads. T h e r e 's a n o t h e r important reason for his trip back as well. Two of his former students have invited him to their wedding. Ian Stuart, England's doubles champion and a finalist in the all-England mixed championships will be marrying Eva Trewdberg, twice an all- England champion. They were introduced at Robinson's university coaching course and just to prove how enthusiastic badminton players can be, they will be spending part of their honeymoon teaching badminton in Robinson's program.
