I, 1973 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER 21 Junior Colts start foo tba ll season with a 12-7 victory WITH PURCHASE OF HALF BEEF OR MORE 2 RED BRAND DELMONICO STEAKS NO OBLIGATION-JUST FOR VISITING OUR HUGE COOLER AND MAKING AN APPOINTMENT The Oakville Junior Colts football team opened their regular season play last week in 1 Oshawa. After suffering three bad defeats in pre-season ochibition games the ® t s bounced back to come up with the win when it counts. They did it by dumping the Oshawa Hawkeyes 12- 7. Jeff Lubert was the big gun for the Colts, scoring both of their touchdowns. The Colts controlled the play and came out of the first half with a 6-0 lead on Lu b e r t 's second quarter score. Oakville increased the lead to 12-0 in the third quarter and kept the Hawkeyes off the board until the fourth quarter. Oakville displayed a well-balanced offence which produced 253 yawls, 148 via the pass and 104 on the ground. Ray Hall pulled down two passes for 78 yards, Jeff Lubert caught a pair for 28 yards, Wayne Wi l cox and Les Edgecomb took one apiece for 30 and 13 yards respectively. In th e r u s h i n g department, Lubert was the work-horse carrying nine times for 60 yards. Les Edgecomb had 28 yards for five carries and Randy Pope carried six times for 13 yards. Pope came in at quarterback after starter R a n d y S h e r m e t a received an injury in the first quarter. Pope finished the game and in addition to his running he went five for twelve in the passing department. The Colts managed thirteen first downs and the Hawkeyes had fifteen. Coach Stewart O'Brien was happy with the defensive play of the team and he feels that the offence is starting to get although it still needs a great deal of work. The defence still needs to be tested against a fast ciuu. neceni games nave been against big teams without too much speed. Quarterback Randy Shermeta will be ready for the next game. It will be the home i opener for the Colts and it will take place this Friday night at 8:00 p.m. at Bronte Field. The Colts will be taking on the Lakeshore Bears. Barrett, MPP Jim Snow Attending the game and poss ibly Miss will be Mayor Harry Oakville, Marilyn Facey. Comets tightening grip on fourth The Oakville Comets came through with a clutch win over second place Niagara Kinsmen W arriors in Ontario junior lacrosse action last week to move them into firm control of fourth place and the last playoff spot. It was one of the most impressive wins of the year for the team which has been suffering from inconsistency throughout the regular season. In the first period neither team could get the best of things and the score was 5-5 going into •the second frame. The second period proved to be the big one for the locals as they came out of it with a 13-6 lead which proved to be more than enough for the win. The big scorer for the Comet s was Br i an Benne t t who c a me through for a hat trick and four assists. Mike Hundt had a six point night on one marker and the five assists while Chris Whalen scored three times. Picking up a pair of goals were Don Milford, Bill Hillis, Bob Lee and David Lytle. Rounding out the scoring were Stu Nelson, Kelly Campbell and Randy Prevost with one goal apiece. The Comets see action again tomorrow night, (Thursday), at Maple Grove arena in their last regularly scheduled home game.
