Many such fatherless boys find the help they need in the Big Brothers Association. But if the Big Brothers Association is to continue bringing men and boys together, it must have funds to pay administrative costs and finance new programs. To this end, the Big Brothers Association of Oakville has started its annual m e mb e r s h i p drive. Rev . My l e s E s t a b r o o k s , s oc i a l worker and executive director of the agency, said 400 letters have been m a i l e d o f f e r i n g membership in the group for a $25 fee. Sixty-five to 70 letters were sent to corporations and the balance went to i n d i v i d u a l s . Rev . Estabrooks said he hoped the membership drive would raise $3,000. Last year's total was $2,500. The a s s o c i a t i o n 's budget for this year calls for $13,000, $8,000 of which was provided by the United Appeal. The $2,000 not covered by the United Appeal and the membership drive is raised by a spring dinner- dance and a fall barn dance-barbecue. The money is used to pay the one salaried staff member, and to cover the cost of rent, publicity and p u b l i c r e l a t i o n s , stationery and brochures. CAMP In addition, the funds will help send 13 boys to camp this summer at Camp McGovern; which is run by the Big Brothers Association of Kitchener- Waterloo. In Oakville, there are 65 boys involved in the Big Brother program. According to Rev. Estabrooks, that figure could well be higher. A survey conducted by the association several years ago revealed that 140 boys needed a Big Brother. Yet, despite the great need, there are only nine boys currently waiting for a Big Brother. Rev. Estabrooks said this figure is very low compared with some other agencies. " We try to keep on top of the thing and make sure we can get them in," he said. "Sometimes it seems like a lot of work, but in the long run it's well worth it." Boys aged eight to 16 are eligible for Big B r o t h e r s , bu t on occasion, seven-year-olds are admitted. "I bend the rule at seven where there's a r e a l n e e d for companionship," Rev. Estabrooks said .. For older boys who may not wish to have a Big Brother, the agency offers brief counselling. Rev. Estabrooks said the counselling service gives them a chance to discuss their problems with a male, when they feel that they simply can't talk things over with a female.
