In order to find a pattern that will fit you properly, the correct measurements must be taken without cheating. When t a k i n g m easurem ents, wear y o u r ~ u s u a l undergarments and shoes to maintain your normal figure and posture. Before beginning to measure, tie a string around your waist to use as a reference point. To begin, take your CHEST measurement by running the tape around your body just beneath your arm pits and across your bustline. Take the m easurem ent rathe.r snugly. T he BUST measurement is taken across the fullest part of the bust and straight across the back. The next measurement is the DIAPHRAGM. This is usually necessary for midriff blouses. It is taken around the body halfway between the waist and the bust. T he WAIST measurement is simply taken where your string sits. The HIGH HIP measurement is taken over the top of the hip bones usually 2" -- 4" below the waist. Record bo t h t h e g i r t h measurement and how far it is taken below the waist. T he F U L L HI P measurement is taken around the fullest part of the hips. This is usually 7" -- 9" below the waist. Again, as with the high hip measurement, record the girth measurement and how far it is below the waist. I The FRONT NECK TO WAIST measurement is taken from the hollow between the neck bones down centre front to the waist. The BUST POINT measurement is taken from the back neck bone, over the shoulder to the bust point and then from there to the centre front on the waistline. The BACK NECK TO WAIST or BACK LENGTH measurement is t aken f rom the prominent neck bone in the back to the waist. T he NECK CIRCUMFERENCE is taken from the fullest part of the neck. This measurement is most usually used in men's shirts. The BACK WIDTH is taken from arm crease to arm crease usually 4" to 6" below the base of the neck. Simply measure from armhole seam to armhole seam if the person you are measuring is wearing a shirt or dress. The S H O U L D E R LENGTH is next . Measure from the base of the neck to the shoulder bone. F o r th e ARM C I R C U M F E R E N C E m easure around the fullest part of the arm. usually 1" below the armpit. T he WRIST CIRCUMFERENCE is measured around the wristbone. For the ARM LENGTH be sure that the arm is bent sl ightly, then measure from shoulder bone to elbow, record that measurement, then continue the tape down to the wrist bone and record that measurement.
