All parties then sat down with Cheval Developments and Property Management of Woodbridge to find a solution. The co-op volunteered to pay rent for the first year and plans were being hatched to raise funds in the community for the following year. At one point an agreement seemed imminent, said Van Vliet, then the owners wanted $5,000 in rent to allow the substation to remain until June. It was then the police decided to pull out and search for a new home. The co-op has allowed Van Vliet to store her office furniture downstairs and has been trying to find an accessible loca tion within their confines for a new sub station. Van Vliet's phone number (844-6444) is still active, but is re-routed through #2 Division (Oakville) where she can retrieve her messages. 'Tor the time being, that's the best we can hope for," said Van Vliet. "Fortunately there has been no thought of removing me from the community, even if I have to set up a cardboard box at Kerr and Stewart. You really need to keep a sense of humour about this." Van Vliet remains optimistic and said several new spots have been investigated. None, unfortunately, are as ideal as the co op. "Clearly it has to be somewhere the public has access to me the way they had here," said Van Vliet, who would hate to see the progress she's made on Kerr Street eroded. After all, she said, some questioned the validity of a lone female police officer working on Kerr Street, an area whose "ethnic gentlemen" and some immigrants were slow to accept her. They came around, though, and now Van Vliet has earned everyone's respect. "That's when you realize the impact you're having on the community," she said. With' Kerr Street's concentration of seniors, special needs residents, ethnic population and youth-related issues, Van Vliet maintains that the community is very special. "Putting all these facets together is not an easy task, but it is also part of the charm of the community," she says. "This is probably the most unique community in all of Halton."
