Wednesday, March 10, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Junior Civitan reunion* The Oakville Junior Civitans are holding their 25th anniver­ sary 25-Hour Dance-a-thon this weekend, and to celebrate the occasion, a reunion is being held. To date, between 60 and 70 former members of the Oakville Junior Civitan Club and others who participated in the annual dance-a-thons are gathering this Saturday evening at the Ramada Inn for a reunion dinner and dance. "We're still accepting replies from people," says Terri Van Exan who was a member from 1974 - the first year the dance- a-thon was held - to 1979 and is now part of the reunion commit­ tee. "We've sent out 130 invita­ tion packages," she explains, "and through word of mouth we've been able to track down a lot of people. I'm receiving names and addresses every day." More than 100 former Junior Civitans have been locat­ ed. "We've got people coming from Halifax, New Brunswick, Michigan, Alabama - we've got a good cross section of people from each year." The reunion, to begin at 6 p.m., includes a buffet dinner for $25, a video screening of past dance-a-thons, scrapbooks of past years' events, and a dance till 1 a.m. Master of ceremonies for the evening will be Phil Semple, first president of the Oakville Junior Civitans. The reunion will be videotaped. "I look forward to meeting a lot of old friends," she says. "That first year we raised $150," said Van Exan. Over the years the dance-a-thons have raised over $870,000 for inter­ disciplinary research, clinical services and community pro­ grams to improve the lives of people at risk for, or affected by, developmental disabilities. Together, they are expected to raise in excess of $50,000 for the Civitan Research Centre, a state of the art facility to find cures for, and causes of, developmental disabilities. To date 47 dancers from the United States, and 60 to 70 from Ontario and Quebec are expected. They will be billeted for the four days of the event with local Civitan and Junior Civitan families. On Friday evening, following pick up at Lester B. Pearson International Airport, the Juniors will be transported to the Oakville Holiday Inn for a banquet, where they will meet each other and their host families. Saturday, participants will be taken on a sight­ seeing trip to Niagara Falls, arriving back in time for the 6 p.m. kick-off of this year's Dance-a-thon. Dance-a-thon rules permit one five-minute break per hour and a half hour pizza break on Sunday at noon. Theme hours, such as 'tacky tourist' and 'The '60s' allow dancers to amuse each other in silly costumes. Senior Civitans and their spouses will be on hand in the kitchen and as chaperones throughout the 25 hour ordeal. The Dance-a-thon ends at 7 Sunday. On Monday, dance-a-thon participants will go for a sightseeing and shopping trip to Toronto, and will visit the CN Tower, the Ontario Science Centre, and the Eaton Centre. Later that evening all guests will meet at a private home in Oakville for a Dance-a-thon Fareweir Party. On Tuesday, the visitors return home. Nominations open for Women o f the Year The call for nominations is underway for Halton's second annual Women of the Year Awards presented by the Women's Information and Support Centre of Halton. The awards will be presented at a reception and ceremony to be held on Tuesday, May 4th, at the Glen Abbey Golf Club. "There are many women in Halton whose exemplary ser­ vice to others raises the bar on leadership, responsiveness, action, perseverance, and social awareness," says Mary Koster, director of the Women's Centre. "They are our neighbours, rela­ tives and colleagues - women who exemplify integrity and determination." Those interested in nominat­ ing an individual are asked to describe their Halton candidate by citing her leadership abilities, challenges she has met and obstacles she has overcome; how she has made a difference and how she has demonstrated her strength. A personal profile sheet should also accompany the form, and nominations must be at The Women's Centre by Friday, April 2nd. Nomination forms are avail­ able at the Women's located at Hopedale Mall, Ste. 210, and by calling the Centre at 847-5520. They may also be obtained from public libraries and businesses in Halton displaying the Women of the Year Awards poster. "At our inaugural ceremony, we presented the awards to four outstanding women from over 30 deserving Halton nominees. We are anticipating drawing even more candidates this year," states Koster. The organizing committee is expecting a repeat sell-out audi­ ence. Tickets are $25 and may also be obtained by calling The Women's Centre. Proceeds from the event are designated to support the work of the Centre - a registered char­ itable organization. The Women's Centre, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, is pleased that The Honourable Hilary M. Weston, Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, has accepted an invitation to speak at the awards ceremony. "The Lieutenant Governor is a staunch supporter of women's causes," says Koster. "We're very pleased she's able to attend. We're looking forward to introducing some of Halton's most successful women to Her Honour." U N IC E F C O M M IT T E E : Oakville has a new UNICEF Committee, thanks to interested citizens and Tim Savage, UNICEF Ontario's regional development co-ordinator. The group was formed last fall, and since February, has been meeting every second Monday at St. Simon's Church at 7 p.m. During its first year, the committee is focusing on rais­ ing awareness of UNICEF in schools, with emphasize on accessibility to education - especially for girls - in the Third World.
