Now in their 40s and early 50s, the fitness generation is turning to plastic surgery to help them fight early signs of aging. "As you get older, there is an inevitable thickening of the mid-section of the body due to hormonal changes and the simple fact of aging," says Otto Weiglein M.D., certified Plastic Surgeon at The Centre for Personal Surgery in Burlington. One of the most popular areas of plastic surgery for this age group is body contouring. Body contouring can help when exercise and good nutrition fall short. Body contouring generally refers to the tightening, reduction and sometimes augmentation of parts of the torso, legs or arms. It involves procedures such as liposuction, tummy tucks and breast lifts or breast augments. Liposuction is the surgical vacuuming of fat from beneath the surface of the skin. The procedure is best suited for patients of average weight with excess fat in localized areas and good overlying skin elasticity. The single most frequently treated areas are the outer thighs in women, followed by the stomach. In men, the flank area or "love handles" are treated most f r e q u e n t l y . Liposuction under the chin is often effectively combined with face and neck lift to produce a more sculpted, angular and youthful jaw line. For baby boomers whose abdomens are wrinkled or sagging, an abdominoplasty or "tummy tuck," can remove fat and tighten the abdominal musculature. This procedure is popular among women whose underlying muscles and skin have been stretched by multiple pregnancies and repeated weight fluctuations. Classic style for spring B y Stephanie MacLellan ADVERTISING FEATURE Instead of jumping on all the hot new trend bandwagons, like most shoe stores, Charles Austin shoe store prides themselves on selling the tried-and-tested The classics. "We don't really carry many of the trendier styles," says store owner Claire Tamowski. "Our shoes have more of a classic look." Charles Austin caters mainly to business women, so the shoes they sell are more basic, but they are the perfect complement to a power suit. "Our shoes for spring come in soft tones," says Tamowski. "There are a lot of camels and whites, but also some silver." Right now, the big name in women's shoes is Roberto Capucci. These Italian-made shoes are "definitely our best seller", according to Tamowski. For more information, call 845-5582, or visit the store at 184 Lakeshore Rd.
