Wednesdsay March 10, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER A5 C onstruction on QEW cou ld begin b y M ay 3 rd Commuters to Toronto, used to driving their way into the city via the QEW, may want to take a different route, beginning as early as May 3rd. That's when construction could start in a 17 month, $18-million-$20-million project through the Erin Mills, Southdown Road section of the QEW. The work includes constructing new twin bridges at the QEW over Erin Mills Parkway-Southdown Road; new interchange ramps; re-alignment of Erin Mills Parkway-Southdown Road under the QEW and the re alignment of adjacent service roads. Tendering for the contract went out March 3rd and a decision is expected by mid-April. Laptops lure thieves Laptop computers continue to disappear, and a business in Oakville is one of the more recent victims. Crime Stoppers seeks information on anyone involved in this type of crime. During the weekend of February 19 through 21, a front window was smashed at Medi Guard, on Bristol Circle in the town's northeast comer. The broken window provided access to an access to an office and a laptop computer was taken. While the exact value of the com puter was not know at the time of the report, they are typically worth a few thou sand dollars. Laptop com puters have become a popular item to steal. The are easy to carry and conceal. A good crime pre vention measure would be to secure the com puter out of sight. If you know someone active in computer thefts, Crime Stoppers would like to hear from you. If you have any information that leads to an arrest in this or any other case, you may be eligi ble for a cash reward. The purpose of this program is: • To support the development of young musicians in the Halton area; • To find and develop new players for the orchestra; • To encourage cultural diversity in the youth of the community; and it is comprised of: The Young Artists Awards These awards stimulate the interest of young people by creating opportunities for them to develop their skills by playing with the orchestra. In turn, their participation helps the orchestra to achieve its objective of continuous improvement of the symphonic sound. The Oakville Branch of Scotia McLeod will again sponsor one award and Petro-Canada will again sponsor two. Each award includes a playing position for one season and a $1,250 bursary to help defray the cost of continuing lessons or further education. In the coming season, it appears there will be more opportunities in the string sections and, therefore, it is tor those sections that applications are invited. The successful recipients must be under 25 years of age and be able to play with the orchestra during its 15 performance season from November to June in order to be eligible. The Kenneth Hollier Award This is a new award, named in honour of the orchestra's founding director, which will also rec ognize promising new artists. The winner will receive a bursary of $250. The lesser amount is no reflection on the quality of the award but rather recognizes the absence of a commitment to play with the orchestra, other than the possibility of a solo under mutually agreeable circumstances. The competition is open to all young, high-performing players of orchestral instruments in the community. Applications for all four awards, accompanied by a tape and a recommendation from a teacher or professional musician, are invited commencing March 1st, 1999. They should indicate which award is being applied for and state the applicant's name; address; phone number; musical edu cation, awards and experience and should be sent to: Oakville Symphony Orchestra, 146 Lakeshore Road E„ Oakville ON L6J 1H4. The competition will close April 15, 1999 and auditions of a "short list" will be held in April or May, with a view to announcing the winners by the close of the current season. If you personally do not qualify but you know someone who might, would you please bring this opportunity to their attention. For more particulars, please call the Oakville Symphony office at (905) 338-1462. L 1999 Mercedes-Benz ML320 Elegance A Mercedes-Benz M-Class is certainly worth waiting for.
