Wednesdsay March 17, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER B7 Homes & Gardens uropean CORIANIn 9 Lateaf in1j INSPIRED: Inspired by the 1930's and '40's sleek French silhouettes and combined with the spare aes thetics of the 50's and 60's Scandinavian influences, presents an exciting fusion of form and function. The expansive sweep of the beautiful oval table is contrasted with dramatically tapered legs. A breakfast side board, with its tall, slender legs and brushed nickel hardware, add drama to the setting. The setting was a winner in this year's furniture design competition sponsored by the Ontario Furniture Manufacturers Association. " Wouldn't life be so much sim pler with a flat basement ceiling. U n fo rtu n a te ly , there are a num ber of obstruc tions we must contend with when finishing our basements: ducts, beams and pipes, to name a few. The best way to deal with these protrusions is to box them in. When boxing- in, remember this rule: treat the sides as walls and the bottom as c e i l i n g . Essentially, this means either using drywall for both sides and the bottom or panel ing the sides of the box and installing ceiling tile on the bot tom. Never put ceiling tile on the sides or paneling on the bottom. Your method of boxing will differ depending on your choice of materials. For drywall, use a 1 5/8" metal track cut to form a 'U'- shape with a 2" shoe on both ends. This shoe is screwed to the underside of the joists giving you a frame to which you attach your drywall. For openings wider than 24" a 1X2 wood stiff ener must be installed inside the trick. Using a dry- wall screw, attach the wood to the track for added stability. Install your track at 16" on centre along the length of the duct. When mea suring your track, be sure to add the width and height of the duct.
