Wednesday, March 17, 1999 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER C7 ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Tribute artists strike a chord with public (C o n tin u e d fro m p a g e C 8 ) He started out in the music busi ness back in the late '60s playing sax ophone for a band called Bounty. "We thought we'd do it for a year or two and try to keep our jobs. But it took off, and we started traveling. So, half of us quit our jobs and the other half we replaced," says the former band leader, recalling his days on the touring circuit. "We played until about 1985, then I got to booking bands. I was 35 and had a chance to join a booking agency and get off the road." That job led to a similar one at a larger Toronto agency that booked such performers ..... ................... The Spice Girls in concert tributes, Lichach says most people aren't purists when it comes to performers. They just want to enjoy a good con cert at prices they can afford. And that's what Bounty Enterprises pro vides. "Most people, once they see a show, it doesn't matter. It's like Las Vegas with the Elvis impersonators. Once that fellow is up there and doing a good job, they're caught up in it. It's entertaining. It's a night out, and it's fun ...T hat's really what it is all about," he says. "For instance, anybody who is a die-hard Beatles fan should go see ... .. The Caverners - "Most people, once they see a show, it doesn't matter. It's like Las Vegas with die Elvis impersonators. Photo by Barrie Erskine Garry Lichach, founder and president o f Bounty Enterprises, displays some of the promotional material that he creates to publicize his look-alikes. The Rod Stewart clone, seen in the poster on the left, is one of the best, he says. as The Rolling Stones and Bryan Adams. "Then I want ed to start my own business with tribute shows. There were a lot of recording bands that really didn't draw a lot of money - it was hit and miss with some of them," he explains. "I thought that I'd sooner have a fellow sell-out at $5 a head, then (get) $20 a head for a band that was sliding." So he branched out into the "trib ute" business, finding clones of pop ular entertainers. His contacts in the business helped him find some of the look-alikes. Others have approached him. But either way, once the clone is under his wing, Lichach takes charge. He will often sit in on rehearsals with a new clone, and if he likes what he sees, he will book a small pre miere performance with invited guests. Then for talented look-alikes, the sky's the limit. For instance, the Rod Stewart clone is currently on a gig in Australia. Although it may seem almost unethical to headline The Beatles or they give the best Beatles show in North America. No one is ever going to see The Beatles again. But when people see these kids they say, 'I don't believe it,' from the open ing song to the close." Right now, one of the most popular shows in Lichach's repertoire is Spice and Backstreet's Back - a tribute to the Spice Girls and the Backstreet Boys. Bounty Enterprises recently booked that particular show at Stage West for three performances. Howev er, those shows immediately sold out, causing the Mississauga dinner the atre to hold the tribute over for anoth er six shows. "At the Hamilton Convention Cen tre, they delayed the show for about 45 minutes to get all the people in," says Lichach of this popular combi nation concert. "We are going to do six shows at the CNE this summer." And, of course, there's the rumour about the Waterfront Festival.
