The Oakville Rangers minor peewee double-A rep squad have made it to the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) championships. And actually they won Sunday's opener against host Uxbridge 6-2 (details to follow). They play the second game at home tonight (Wednesday), 8 p.m., at Oakville Arena. They're in Uxbridge again on Sunday (2:15 p.m.) and a fourth game, if necessary, would be held at Maplegrove next Tuesday, 8 p.m. The Rangers advanced with three OMHA play- down series wins over (in order) St. Catharines, Brampton and Orangeville. The Rangers won the first two series in straight games and needed one extra game to put away Orangeville. Here's a playoff recap: (first round series) Oakville opened their playoff drive with a 2-1 home win over visiting St. Catharines. Captain Kevin Sinclair and Joe MacNeil scored third period goals. Assists went to Daniel Hannigan-Daley, Graham Tough and Corey Halyk. Back in Oakville, having deciphered their opposi tion's defensive strategy, the Rangers won 5-1. Scoring for the Rangers were Tough, Halyk, Sinclair, MacNeil and Jordy McMillan. Assists were earned by Halyk, Kerry Barchan, Brent Higgins and McMillan. Once again, Matt Pike was solid in net. Oakville clinched the series with a 4-2 win, again on home ice. Dan Szarka, having just returned from a neck injury, was in fine form. Hannigan-Daley led the offence with two goals while Tough and McMillan contributed single markers. Assists went to Halyk, Marc Richardson, Lucas Pamanzone and Barchan. (second round series) Oakville opened their second round series with a 7- 1 win over Brampton. Goals were scored by Joe MacNeil (3), Kevin Sinclair (2), Corey Halyk and Brent Higgins. Assists went to Daniel Hannigan-Daley (2), Marc Richardson (2), MacNeil, Kerry Barchan, Higgins, Lucas Pamanzone and Jordy McMillan. In Brampton, Oakville prevailed 4-1. Goals were scored by MacNeil, Higgins, Sinclair and Hannigan- Daley. Assists went to Graham Tough (2), Barchan, Richardson, Mark Harris and Sinclair. In their last meeting, Oakville toppled Brampton 8- 3. Scoring a pair o f goals each were Hannigan-Daley and McMillan. Single markers were contributed by Richardson, MacNeil, Barchan and Higgins while assists were tallied by Halyk (2), Pamanzone (2), Sinclair (2), MacNeil (2), Harris, Tough, Richardson and Barchan. Next to face Rangers were archrival Orangeville who, last year, squeezed Oakville out of playoff action in the sixth game o f a five-game series. Needless to say, the Rangers did not wish to see history repeat. The Rangers opened with a dazzling 6-2 home win on Feb. 28. Matt Pike was brilliant in net. Leading the offensive attack were Joe MacNeil (2), Lucas Pamanzone, Daniel Hannigan-Daley, Brent Higgins and Corey Halyk. Assists were earned by Pamanzone, Higgins, Hannigan-Daley, Kevin Sinclair, Mark Harris, MacNeil, Kerry Barchan and Ryan Mant. There was wide agreement that had it not been for the stellar goaltending efforts o f Dan Szarka, the Rangers may not have won the second game in Orangeville on March 3. In the 5-2 win, Mark Harris potted a pair o f goals while single markers went to Corey Halyk, Lucas Pamanzone and Daniel Hannigan-Daley. Assisting were Sinclair (3), Pamanzone, McMillan, Hannigan-Daley, Tough, Halyk and Harris. The Rangers eight-game playoff winning streak came to an abrupt end back at Glen Abbey on March 7. The Orangeville team, obviously determined not to let Oakville sweep the series, were the superior team in the 5-3 win. Scoring for the Rangers were Harris, Hannigan-Daley and MacNeil. Assists went to Sinclair (2), Hannigan-Daley and Harris. It was back to Orangeville for the fourth game on March 10 with Oakville pulling out a 5-4 overtime victory to save a fifth and deciding game. Oakville got off to a slow start, allowing two quick goals. In the second period, however, the snipers warmed up and once again Mark Harris started off the scoring with Daniel Hannigan-Daley pocketing the next two goals to tie the game at 3-3. Brent Higgins then popped in the go-ahead goal only to have Orangeville tie it up on a power play to send the teams into overtime tied at 4- 4. Kevin Sinclair was the overtime hero. Assists were earned by Sinclair (2), MacNeil (2), Hannigan-Daley, Harris, Pamanzone, Tough and Matt Fehler. They're facing Aurora in the finals The Oakville Rangers double-A novice rep team has reached the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) finals, disposing of the Burlington Eagles in four games to advance to the championship round. The Rangers started the series on a high note with goalies Ryan Zurawell and Liam Armstrong combining to shut out Burlington 3-0. Goals were scored by Jordan Macintosh, Spencer Jenkin and Jordy Watts. Assists went to Jonathan Lee, Anthony Albrecht, Jordy Watts and Spencer Jenkin. Oakville won the second game 5-4. After surrender ing two quick goals to a fired up Burlington squad, Oakville pocketed five in a row before allowing two third period goals to Burlington. Goals were scored by Jamie McKeown (2), Anthony Albrecht, Spencer Jenkin and Aaron Mirsky. Assists went to Jacob Truant, Brett Runciman, Jordy Macintosh, Jonathan Lee, Aaron Mirsky, Mathew Bertrand, Jacob Truant and Alex Corrance. In the third game, defenceman Alex Corrance had the crowd gasping as he finished of a spectacular end-to-end rush to put Oakville up 1-0. Jonathan Lee assisted. But Burlington was able to tie up the low scoring game and force a fourth game. In the fourth game, Oakville built up a 2-0 lead. With two minutes to go, Burlington got on the board and were pressing for the equalizer when defenceman Matt Grigg saved the game, clearing out a Burlington forward that was about to pull the trigger on a point blank shot. Jordy McIntosh and Jordy Watts scored. Assisting were Aaron Mirsky, Jonathan Lee and Anthony Albrecht. Sponsored by Acrobat and Ultrafresh, Oakville will now represent the OMHA western region in the finals against the eastem/central champion Aurora Tigers. Oakville Hornets rep reports UNDEFEATED BUT OUSTED The Oakville Hornets atom C team, sponsored by Merrill Lynch, faced off against the Burlington Barracudas in a provincial playdown game. The Hornets needed a win against Burlington in order to advance. Unfortunately, all the Hornets could muster was a 2-2 tie. It was a close, hard fought game with Amber King opening the scoring, unas sisted in the first period. Two goals by Burlington left the Hornets needing two more goals to win. Melissa Snedden got one of them after converting a pass from Amber King in the third period, but the Hornets could find the net again. In the end, while not losing a game in the playdowns, the Hornets fell a goal short of advancing. Later in the day, the Hornets tied the Mississauga Chiefs 2-2, extending their unbeaten string to six games. After falling behind 2-0 the Hornets fought back to tie it on goals by Katie Gorman and Amber King. Assists went to Ashley Middleton, Jackie Szarka, Melissa Snedden and Erin Mitzel. On Sunday, Feb. 27, the Hornets saw their unbeaten string end at six games with a 3-1 loss to Mississauga Chiefs. Playing their third game in a 24-hour period, the Hornets fell behind 2-0 before Amber King finally put them on the board, assisted by Allison Thompson and Melissa Sneddon. NOTE: in the Friday, Feb. 26 edition of the Beaver, there was an error in one of the top point getters. It should have read Monique Kahnert with three assists. REGULAR SEASON IS OVER The Oakville Hornets atom-BB squad finished up their regular season with two wins and a loss. Tenille Clarke scored the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Stouffville. Gabrielle Gaudet recorded the shutout and kudos to the fine defensive work of Traci Galbraith, Bianca Mirabelli, Stephanie Latty, Sarah Magee and Laura Iosue. Danielle Bernier, from Amanda Cicchini, scored the lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Barrie. Hard work from Roxanne Johnson, Jordyn Mackonka, Stephanie Secord and Rachel Vallance kept the Hornets in the game until the final buzzer. Called upon at the last minute, Mary DiMarco played a superb game in net, keeping the Chiefs to only one goal. Brandice Moniz and Danielle Bernier scored with assists to Amanda Cicchini, Laura Iosue and Tenille Clarke.
