Featured at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, the Mazda Troy Lee Edition B3000 Cab Plus 4 4x2 offers the "no-pris oners" look and ground clearance of four-wheel drive in a 4x2. Like a motocross motorcycle, it has the power to go anywhere and can take a beating from the most rugged terrain. With a raised suspension, front and rear skid plates, fender flares, 16-inch wheels, and extra large tires, the Troy Lee Edition B3000 crushes the competition. Only the Troy Lee Edition B3000 has four doors, torsion bar front suspension, rear-wheel ABS, fog lights, anti-theft ignition and a bedliner. Other exclusive features include the extreme style of Troy Lee Designs custom exterior graph ic treatments, alloy wheels designed by Troy Lee and a custom interior with an attitude. A 4x2 with the look of a 4x4 has a low cost of ownership. It costs several hundred dollars less to insure, has 10 percent better fuel economy and is over 300 pounds lighter for better acceleration. Additionally, the 3.0-liter V6 engine is a Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV) capable of using either regular unleaded gasoline or E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline). Troy Lee is a leading-edge graphic designer with a passion for extreme sports. His company, Troy Lee Designs has created painted helmets, speed equipment, and other apparel for extreme- sports enthusiasts for over 17 years. All three Troy Lee Edition models are avail able in Black Clear Coat, Amazon Green Metallic and Toreador Red Metallic. Reflective body-side flame graphics, "Dual Sport" tailgate logo and the Troy Lee Designs signature logo complete the exterior. Troy Lee Edition models feature gray two-tone seats with silver accent piping and the Troy Lee "1950's pinstripe" monogrammed on the head rests, gray two-tone door panels with a mono grammed Troy Lee Designs signature logo and carbon fiber-look trim on the instrument panel and door panels. The entry-level Civic was one of the first Japanese imports to take the market by storm after the Japanese import invasion fleet dropped their ramps on North American shores way back in the 70s. The Honda Civic's blend of quality and economy wasted little time gaining a solid reputation of durable per formance and good value for the dollar. Since then, Honda has never looked back. The current sixth genera tion Civic, first unveiled in the 1996 model year and now built here in Canada, has maintained that historical value leadership position through a process of constant refinement and yearly improvements. I recendy spent some time behind the wheel of a 1999 Civic Sedan. Now, you can't really blame automotive companies for wanting to put their best face forward, so most press vehicles are tarted-up premi um models, cars that have been optioned up to the ying- yang with every goody known to modem man. But in keep ing with the Civic's value posi tioning, I had asked for a plain-Jane, entiy-level sedan. For 1999, the Honda Civic Sedan has seen little in the way of change. Under the hood, the reliable aluminum alloy, 1.6 liter SOHC 16-valve, 4 cylinder engine still pumps out a respectable 106 hp @ 6200 rpm. And, much to my surprise, when I picked up my LX tester, I realized that was exactly what I had gotten. Crank handle windows. AM/FM radio. No cassette or CD. Power-assisted steering and brakes. Power nothing else. And more blanks than switches on the dashboard and instrument panel. It was perfect. It was the kind of Honda people actually buy. But even at its most basic level, the Honda Civic Sedan exudes build quality. No rat tles, squeaks or shimmies. Everything from the way the trim is screwed down to the actual, driving feel of the car is best described as "tight". This may be an economy car but its verve and performance abili ties encourage driving confi dence and sporty handling.
