The dancing began Saturday at 6 p.m., and finished Sunday at 7 p.m., leaving participants "collapsed in an exhausted heap," reports Junior Civitan member Michelle Camovale. "But everyone in the gym at Oaklands Regional Centre knew they were there for a good cause." The event raised close to $52,000 for the Civitan International Research Center in Birmingham, Alabama, which is dedicated to finding a cure for Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Tay-Sachs and other similar diseases in children. In addition to participating in the dance-a-thon, the visit ing teens went on sightseeing trips to Niagara Falls and Toronto during their four-day stay in Oakville. They were billeted by Oakville Civitan families. Dance-a-thon organizers this year were Leah MacDougall and Cheryl Savage of the Oakville Junior Civitans, and senior Oakville Civitan Club advisor Bob McCannell. The first dance-a-thon was held in March 1974 at the Oakville Masonic hall, and raised about $200. Three years later, it became an international event with the participation of visiting teens from the United States, thanks to the enthu siasm of Marg Campbell who met Becky Cardell of Georgia at the Junior Civitan International Training Academy. Over the next 22 years, between 35 and 45 American teens would come to Oakville for the dance-a-thon weekend. To date, the dance-a-thon has raised more than $920,000 for interdisciplinary research, clinical services and commu nity programs to improve the lives of people at risk for, or affected by, developmental disabilities. Junior Civitan, established in 1932, has about 16,000 members in nearly 500 clubs throughout North America, Europe and Africa.
