Corporate culture needs managing By Dave Anderson SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER T h e As she walked toward me I could see she was carrying a business card in each hand. She stopped, introduced herself and said, "here is my business card". She then handed me the second card and said, "and these are the values (read beliefs) this company operates on." The only action-motivators in human beings (past fear, fantasy, sur vival and the sex drive) are the things they believe to be true. We act on our beliefs. (Salespeople call them 'hot but tons'.) It is those beliefs that make us unique and different. Corporations have belief structures that they operate on. We call a compa ny's belief structure 'The Corporate Culture'. Unfortunately, and to their detriment, most companies do not con sciously manage this essential asset. Just as a human being acts on his or her beliefs so too does a corporation act on the things it believes to be 'true'. Those companies who consciously manage what they want their associates and T h e -- B u s i n e s s ^ D o c t o F ^ customer to believe are usually among the fast track companies within their industries. Managing the corporate cul ture (beliefs) means defining the beliefs and keeping them foremost in the asso ciate's mind. The beliefs become the primary point of focus for everyone within the company. Because these beliefs are the primary focus the associ ates act on them automatically and habitually and my doing that create results commensurate with the quality of the beliefs the company holds. Managing the corporate culture is what we pay presidents big bucks to do. Through managing the beliefs they cause actions that produce specific results. That is why we hold presidents responsible for corporate results.
