D2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Tough loss for Bruins in semifinal gam e (C o n tin u e d fro m p a g e D1) who scored a game-high 17 points, launched a three- point attempt with 15 seconds to go. He was hit in the arm by a Dawson defender but there was no foul called. The shot ended up pinned between the basket and the backboard, giving the ball to Dawson and a date with Langara in the final. The defending champions from B.C. rallied with a 14-2 run to beat Dawson 91-85 to repeat as national champions. The two-time Ontario champion Bruins were dev astated by the loss since the game was ultimately lost on the boards, a Sheridan strength. "I said to the guys before the tournament -- no rebounds, no rings," said Bruins head coach Jim Flack. "You can't give a team like Dawson that many sec ond chances and that cost us." The bigger Bruins were out-rebounded 40-34 (16- 8 on the offensive glass). Added Sheridan athletic director Dick Ruschiensky: "We lost to them in last year's semifinal and they were the better team. "I thought we were the better team this year which makes it so disappointing. "We played hard but it wasn't meant to be." Mike Alleyne added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Bruins. Sheridan then headed to the bronze medal semifi nal game and there was concern there might be a let down. The concern grew when they fell behind 15-2 to Edmonton's host Grant MacEwan Griffins. But thanks to their bench, the Bruins rallied to win it 82- 75. Hugh Bent, who played sparingly all year, sparked the Bruins with 13 points, his best game of the year. In the bronze medal championship game, the Bruins again fell behind, 22-17, when coach Flack emptied his bench to replace all five starters. The result was a 19-5 Sheridan run and a 36-27 halftime lead. The Bruins dominated the Lethbridge Kodiaks the rest of the way, routing the Alberta squad 90-66. "Like Tom Cruise said in Risky Business, some times you just got say, what the ...", summed up Flack LEFT PHOTO: Shane Bascoe, in a photo celebrating the Bruins' provincial champi onship win, grabbed a pile of honours at the nationals. He tied for national college player of the year and was then edged out on a re-vote to break the tie to Langara's Randy Nohr. But he made the first all-star team and again received all-Canadian honours. He also picked up one of five men's Ontario All-Academic awards. RIGHT PHOTO: Ricardo Edwards goes up for the shot in the regular season victory against Algonquin that wrapped up the regular season title for Sheridan in the tough central division. Photos by Peter J. Thompson of his decision to go wholesale to the bench. Shane Bascoe and Bryan Harris each scored 12 points. Mike Alleyne, who was named a second team tournament all-star, added 11 points and five rebounds. Chris Bennett and Andrew Muir each scored 11 points. Burlington native Kris Ceelen added nine points as every player hit the scoresheet. It was another great season for the double blue. "I'm very disappointed because it wasn't the color we wanted. But I'm happy we didn't pack it in after the Dawson loss," said coach Flack. "We came back and continued to play hard and got the bronze." Bascoe rounded out a great season, making the first all-star team and again receiving all-Canadian honours. In fact, he almost was named Canadian col lege player of the year. After the first round of voting he was tied with Langara's Randy Nohr, but was then edged on a re-vote with just the two players on the ballot. Bascoe summed up the year for the Bruins. "We only lost seven games all year. We wanted gold but if we couldn't get that, bronze is good, too. That means we won our last game of the year." Sixth-ranked McMaster, with St. Thomas Aquinas grad Rodney Baptiste and Loyola grad Nick Rupcich, won their opening game Friday night, knock ing off third ranked Victoria 71-58. Both teams made it to the big show through the wild card route. Baptiste earned player of the game honours. He played 29 minutes and his line was 16 points (eight field goals on 12 attempts, while missing one trey and two foul shots), five rebounds (two offensive, three defensive), two assists, two steals and one block. He had three turnovers. In his 18 minutes, Rupcich snagged a team-high 12 rebounds (five offen sive, seven defensive) which tied him with Eric Hinrichson of Victoria. He added four points and two assists. Mac led 31-27 at the half. The win vaulted Mac into Saturday's national semifinal game where they bowed out 77-68 to eventual national champion and host, Saint Mary's. Mac trailed 39-35 at the half. In 32 minutes, Baptiste had six points, making two of 10 field goals, miss ing his one trey and hitting both of his free throws. He had three assists and one steal and turned over the ball three times. Nick Rupcich had no rebounds in 14 minutes, hitting three of seven field goal attempts for six points. Mac's Steve Maga made the tournament all-star team. Oakville was also represented with Ben Gorham on the Ryerson squad. At its first ever national championships of any kind, eighth-ranked Ryerson, who were surprise eastern division champs in Ontario after a fourth place reg ular season finish, had the unenviable task of facing top ranked and eventual finalist Alberta in the opener, losing 100-83.
