INTERNATIONAL ACTION The Oakville Rangers tyke rep team were recently hosted by a team from Flint, Michigan in a three-game friendship series. Oakville came out strong in the opening game, showing great passing and winning 2-0. Oakville goals were scored by Lachlan Neal and Matthew McKeown. Assists went to Matthew Prapavessis, Joel Selinger, Bobby Godber and Phillip Mariono. In the second game, Oakville seemed to let down, settling for a 2-2 tie. After the first two games, the two teams exchanged memorabilia with each other and enjoyed a pizza party. Oakville played well in the third game, bring ing home a 4-1 win. Oakville goals were scored by Michael Derenzis, Austen Gregoris, Elliott Cowbum and Matthew McKeown. Assists went to Bradley Morris, Derenzis, Michael Mirabelli and Gregoris. DOUGLAS ROCK SOLID The Oakville Rangers double-A minor novice rep team, sponsored by Lucent Technologies, opened their tri-county champi onship series with a 6-3 win over Burlington. Goals were scored by Aaron Kachkowski (2), Calvin Reynolds (2), Steven Merrick and Ryan McMahon. Assists went to McMahon (2), Matt Lorito (2), Cam Watts and Reynolds. Grayson Douglas was rock solid between the pipes, mak ing several key stops to keep his team in front. The Oakville Rangers triple-A minor peewee rep team, sponsored by Polywheels, is once again headed for the OMHA championship playdowns which will be held Easter weekend in (C o n tin u e d fro m p a g e D1) won on this night with an NHL crew. Brandon DeFazio and Kris Bonnell scored. Alex Mackenzie picked up an assist. Game two back at Oakville Arena on March 16 was a spectator's dream but a coach's nightmare. The Rangers fell behind no less than five times but on each occasion bounced back with tremendous effort to finally clinch a 7-6 win. Goals were scored by Taylor Martin (2), Anthony Gomes, Marcus Pryde, Paul Mooney and Taylor Farris. Assists went to Michael Morrison (3), Alex Mackenzie (2), Kyle Oliveira, Marcus Pryde, Anthony Gomes and Taylor Farris. The Rangers went back up to Dundalk Arena on March 18 expecting a much tighter, low scoring game, and again they were right. It turned into a classic encounter as both teams showed the strength and character that had brought them this far. It was a skating exhibition as both teams went end-to- end at an incredibly fast pace. The game went into sudden death overtime, tied 1- 1. Both teams came close to winning, both rattling shots of the crossbar, but the Rangers coped very well and had the Highlanders penned into their zone for several minutes. Marcus Pryde was the overtime hero, assisted by Alex Mackenzie. Brandon DeFazio opened Windsor. Guelph gave the boys all they could handle before succumbing in a five game series (as recounted in last Wednesday's Oakville Beaver). the scoring for Oakville, assisted by Kris Bonnell and Kyle Oliveira. Oakville hoped to carry the momen tum into game four on March 20 with the intent to wrap the series up. Although they were eventually able to prevail 6-3, thanks to an unanswered four-goal third period, it was Grey Bruce that came out with the momen tum. It was, however, the Rangers who scored first although Grey Bruce tied it up to end the first period at 1-1. Oakville went ahead 2-1 and then Grey Bruce replied with a pair of goals to end the second period up 3-2, which would turn out to be their only lead of the game. It was Marcus Pryde's day as he slid his fourth goal into an empty net with 15 seconds remaining in the game. Other goals were scored by Taylor Martin and Brandon De Fazio. Assists went to Anthony Gomes (2), Daniel Ruffo (2), Michael Morrison and Kyle Oliveira. A few final notes ... after the first game, the refereeing was excellent. The Rangers thoroughly deserved their series win and go confidently into the OMHA championship series. The Highlanders can take much credit for the classy way in which they congratulated the Rangers' players, coaches and parents after suffering a huge disappointment. It was sportsmanship at its best.
