Official Opening

Oakville Centennial Project

NOTES FOR CHAIRMAN R.J. NEW

You are to be introduced by the Master of Ceremonies immediately following [crossed out: Reeve Herbert Merry’s] Mayor Anderson’s words of welcome. At this time I suggest you prepare something along the following lines.

- Give a brief and concise history of the Centennial Project Committee, its functions and duties.

- Lead into present Committee. All members of your Committee will be seated on your left. You should introduce each and ask them to stand and be recognized.

- You should then lead into the choosing of the architect and contractor. Introduce both of these men and ask them to stand and be recognized (on your left).

- You should then mention the fact that the building itself is multi-purpose. Mention the swimming pool, give a few facts and figures and especially completion date of swimming pool.

- This should lead you into the fact that one of the main functions of this particular building is the new Central Library. This in turn will lead you into the introduction of Mr. D.H.W. Bath, Chairman of the Library Board, Town of Oakville.

- Mr. Bath speaks.

- After Mr. Bath has spoken, you return to the rostrum and lead into (something like this) “many groups have contributed many dollars, many goods and much in the way of services to this building.” At this point you should express the thanks of the committee and the Town to all those who have made a contribution, and read the names of the donors from the attached list. Follow with “here today to represent all of the many and diverse groups is Mr. S. Bonser, President of one of our largest industries I Oakville – Procor Limited – and a man most active in our community affairs – Mr. Bonser.

- Once you have introduced Mr. Bonser, you may take your seat.

- Mr. Bonser speaks.

- Immediately following Mr. Bonser, you return to the rostrum and ask [crossed out: Reeve Merry] Mayor Anderson to introduce His Honour.

- Following this, your duties are completed with the exception that you will leave with the mayor immediately after the playing of the national anthem and will follow the Reeve to escort the Lieutenant-Governor out of the room. Once you are free of the room, formalities cease and I suggest that you take the Lieutenant-Governor on a tour of the building. At this point it might be wise to ask Sally Stout or one of her people to be your tour guide.

- After the tour it will then be your duty to escort His Honour (along with [crossed out: Reeve] Mayor) to the main entrance to see him safely out of the building into the hands of his escort.
