Sully Are you thinking about adopting an ani mal from Oakville's Humane Society? You might want to think about adopting a male rather than a female animal because, according to Oakville's Humane Society's Heather White, most people prefer female ani mals. White says that people also tend to want puppies and kit tens, rather than older animals, and small dogs are also pre ferred. In fact, Emily Harper, a student at River Oaks Public School, said that when she and her family went there to get a small dog, they were told that there was a waiting list. The amount of adoptions in the Humane Society has been on the rise since the 1980's. White said as the popula tion of Oakville increases so does the amount of animals coming into the shelter. Don't worry, because there are also more people adopting animals. You might be sur prised to learn that the Humane Society has more cats than dogs, due to the fact there are many stray cats. White also says that there have been many trends, made by the media that have brought animals into the shelter. For instance, the movie 101 Dalmatians caused the Dalmatian trend. Since Dalmatians Photo by Peter J. Thompson "Oskar" the dalmation has some fun with Oakville Humane Society Assistant manager Janet Rakowski. aren't the right type of dogs for some peo ple, many Dalmatians ended up in the Humane Society. Many people associate the Humane Society with mixed breeds, but White said, "Let's put it this way, there are more Purebred animals than people think."
