36 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Friday, March 26, 1999 Register now for Performing Arts Camp The Oakville Performing Arts Camp has grown from its small beginnings with 50 or 60 students to over 200 students and 25 senior high school assistants. This large group of students enjoy many different courses from improvisation to chamber music and from theory games and Orff for four-year-olds to senior orchestra. The camp has been held for two weeks every July for the past 18 years in an Oakville high school, and the faculty now includes some of the finest teachers, not only in southern Ontario but also from Quebec and New York state. A week or two at the camp, where each student enjoys a private lesson and a group lesson on a chosen instrument every day, gives a great start to children as well as to their parents or grandparents who are observing. The camp also has teachers who have particular skills for teaching adults and older beginners. Private lessons and/or orchestra and chamber music may be taken by teenagers and adults, who are not expected to partic ipate in the other group activities designed for children. The Junior Program in the morning for four- to six-year-old children includes Orff, theory games, crafts, a parent class, and lessons on the child's chosen instru ment. The Senior Program has many options including improvisation, orchestra, cham ber music, art, singing, ukulele, drama, tra ditional fiddling, and swimming at the end of the day. Everyone receives a private lesson daily on the instrument of his or her choice - piano, violin, viola, cello, guitar, flute, clarinet, recorder, or voice. Some other wind instruments may be accommodated at the beginning or ele mentary levels. If there is sufficient interest, a special course to prepare more advanced flutists for orchestral playing will be offered by Joan Browne, principal flutist in the Oakville Symphony Orchestra. There is a lunch-hour concert every day by students and staff, which is open to all. This year the camp will be held at White Oaks Secondary School from July 12th to 16th and July 19th to 23rd.
