The firm had originally sought to build on the 10-acre site quickly after bringing its plan to the Town of Oakville's Committee of Adjustment. The committee could have agreed with Home Depot that a minor variance to the existing zoning would be in order. But they rejected the proposal and as a result, Home Depot decided to appeal the committee's decision to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB). The Town's planning department believed the proposal should have been handled through an amendment to the Town's Official Plan. This would require support for the proposal by different technical agencies. In other words, reports would have to be made on the plan's impact on roads, water and sewage services, elec trical capacity, noise issues and other factors. Two public meetings in north Oakville were held with Home Depot and Town officials attending. As reported in the March 19th issue of the Oakville Beaver, Home Depot believed it had fulfilled its obligations and was ready to proceed with the plan until the committee of adjustment, killed the scheme. But on March 18th, Home Depot re-filed their plan through a planned amendment to the Official Plan, exact ly what the Town had originally want ed. John Ghent, the Town's Manager of Current Planning, said Wednesday, there will likely be a series of public meetings into the proposal, along with all the other amendment procedures specified in the Official Plan. After all of these steps have been completed, a decision will be rendered by Town Council. If the amendment passes, a store will be built. If it's rejected, Home Depot can reactivate its original appeal to the OMB. According to Ghent, the entire process should be completed in 90 days.
